Land-Wheelwright laboratory takes shape
1932-1937corporateLand and George Wheelwright built a Boston-area research company around synthetic polarizing sheet, moving from experimental rooms into purpose-built production. In 1937 new investment supported reincorporation as Polaroid Corporation and transferred the laboratory patents into the new firm.

Wartime optics expand manufacturing
1940smanufacturingMilitary and industrial optical work expanded Polaroid beyond sunglasses and camera filters. The company learned to manufacture coated materials and precision optical assemblies at scale, creating the interdisciplinary base of chemistry, mechanics and design that later supported instant photographic systems.

Instant photography reaches the public
1947-1948engineeringLand demonstrated instant photography in 1947, and the Model 95 reached customers in 1948. Its negative-positive roll-film process used camera rollers to spread reagent before the photographer peeled apart a finished print, relocating much of the darkroom process into a portable system.

Roll-film Land Cameras diversify
1948-1962systemThe Model 95 opened a broad family of folding roll-film cameras, followed by higher-specification 110, 120, 150, 160, 700, 800 and 900 models and the smaller 80 series. Rangefinders, automatic exposure and supplier-made lenses differentiated equipment for casual and advanced photographers.

Pack film simplifies loading
1963-1976systemThe Automatic 100 introduced pack loading and electronic exposure, then 100, 200, 300 and 400 series cameras varied body material, finder, timer, flash and lens. Manual 180, 190 and 195 models used Japanese shutters and named optics, giving the platform a professional branch.

Swinger makes instant photography social
1965-1970sbusinessThe low-cost Swinger and its successors carried instant photography into youth culture and casual social use. Colorpack and other rigid-body pack-film cameras broadened the same idea, while portrait, identification, medical and industrial systems made immediate prints useful far beyond family snapshots.

SX-70 completes the one-step process
1972-1981engineeringThe folding SX-70 combined reflex viewing, a collapsible mirror path, motorized ejection and integral film that developed in daylight. Alpha revisions improved the mechanism, Sonar added ultrasonic autofocus, and rigid-body OneStep and Pronto cameras translated the format into mass-market products.

Integral systems multiply
1980s-1990ssystemHigher-speed 600 film supported flash-equipped box cameras and folding SLR 680/690 models. Spectra, called Image in several markets, used a wider integral format, while Captiva, i-Zone and JoyCam pursued different print shapes and uses. Similar styling did not make these film packs interchangeable.

Patent victory meets market transition
1985-2001businessPolaroid prevailed in its instant-photography patent case against Kodak, leading Kodak to leave the field in 1986. Yet dependence on chemical instant imaging became a liability as digital photography grew. The original Polaroid Corporation entered Chapter 11 in 2001 after a difficult diversification.

Historic production stops
2001-2008end-of-lineAssets and the Polaroid name passed through a reorganized company and later Petters Group ownership. Instant camera production and the remaining film lines stopped in 2008, and the post-reorganization company entered bankruptcy that December amid the wider collapse of the Petters organization.

Enschede factory restarts instant film
2008-2017manufacturingThe Impossible Project organized around Polaroid's surviving Enschede plant and rebuilt integral-film production with altered materials and supply chains. Film sales resumed in 2010, preserving the physical Polaroid format even though the original Cambridge corporation and its formulas did not continue intact.

Polaroid name and film reunite
2017–presentcorporateIn 2017 the majority shareholders behind the Impossible Project acquired PLR IP Holdings, owner of the Polaroid brand. Polaroid Originals followed, and the businesses were integrated under Polaroid B.V.; the current company again develops instant cameras and manufactures film at Enschede.
