Polaroid — history
Polaroid began with a problem in light, not with a camera. Edwin Land, fascinated by polarization as a student, left Harvard and worked in New York libraries and borrowed rooms until he could make a practical synthetic polarizing sheet. In 1932 he and Harvard instructor George Wheelwright formed Land-Wheelwright Laboratories. The small company moved around the Boston area, devised its own production machinery, and found early customers in Eastman Kodak camera filters and American Optical sunglasses. In 1937 it was reincorporated as Polaroid Corporation, transferring the young laboratory's patents into a business built around research and manufacture.
The first decade made Polaroid an optical-materials company with an unusually broad imagination. Polarizing sheets appeared in sunglasses, filters, scientific instruments, stereoscopic spectacles and military optics. During the Second World War the company developed goggles, range-finding and display components, and other optical products for the armed services. These projects enlarged its laboratories and taught its staff to combine chemistry, precision coating, mechanics and industrial design. That mixture would become the company's real specialty: not a single lens formula, but complete photographic systems in which materials and cameras had to work together.
Instant photography began with a famously simple question. On a family trip in 1943, Land's daughter Jennifer asked why she could not see a photograph immediately. Land later described conceiving the essential process during a walk, but turning the idea into a reliable product required years of chemistry and engineering. He demonstrated the process in 1947, and the Model 95 Land Camera reached stores in 1948. The photographer exposed a negative-positive roll-film sandwich, pulled it through rollers that spread reagent, waited, then peeled apart a finished print. For the first time, the darkroom had become part of the camera system.
The Model 95 established the large folding Land Camera shape and opened a long run of roll-film cameras. Models 110, 120, 150, 160, 700, 800 and 900 offered different combinations of rangefinder, automatic exposure and better lenses, while the smaller Model 80 family brought instant pictures to a broader public. Polaroid often bought shutters, optical components or complete lens assemblies from outside firms, especially for its higher-grade cameras. The badge on the body therefore identifies the system and marketer, but a Tominon, Rodenstock Ysarex or Mamiya Sekor belongs to the optical maker named on the lens.
Pack film transformed the system again in 1963. Instead of loading two rolls, photographers inserted a compact pack and pulled each exposed sheet through the processing rollers. The Automatic 100 introduced electronic exposure control, and successive 100, 200, 300 and 400 series cameras mixed metal or plastic bodies, different rangefinders, timers, flash systems and two-, three- or four-element lenses. Professional manual models such as the 180, 190 and 195 added Japanese shutters and Tominon optics. The cameras look closely related, but their lens quality, focusing arrangements and accessory support can differ substantially.
Polaroid also learned how to make immediacy inexpensive and social. The Swinger of 1965, promoted by television advertising and priced for young buyers, used a simple exposure check and roll film. The Big Swinger and Colorpack families followed, while portrait, identification, medical and industrial cameras turned instant photography into a practical working tool. The 20x24 studio camera carried the same idea to spectacular scale. Artists working with Polaroid's studios could make finished, life-size color photographs, and the company's artist-support program brought photographers into a productive conversation with its engineers and materials scientists.
Land's most ambitious camera arrived in 1972. The folding SX-70 was a single-lens reflex that collapsed into a slim metal-and-leather package, then opened into a viewing and exposure path built around mirrors. More important, its integral film ejected automatically and developed in daylight without peeling or timing. A battery inside each film pack powered the camera. Later Alpha versions refined the mechanics, Sonar models added ultrasonic autofocus, and inexpensive rigid-body OneStep and Pronto cameras carried the SX-70 format to a much larger audience. The word 'one-step' finally described the whole act of making the picture.
The 600 system raised film speed and moved the flash into everyday camera design. Box cameras, Impulse models and countless retail editions shared broad internal families, while the SLR 680 and 690 combined folding-reflex viewing, sonar autofocus and electronic flash. Spectra, sold as Image in some markets, introduced a wider integral format and a different camera platform. Captiva, i-Zone, JoyCam and other late formats show Polaroid searching for new shapes and uses as one-hour labs and then digital cameras changed what consumers expected from photographic speed.
Polaroid defended its instant-photography patents in a long case against Kodak. The 1985 infringement decision and Kodak's withdrawal in 1986 confirmed the strength of Polaroid's technical portfolio, yet legal victory could not solve the next transition. Land had left the company in 1982 after the unsuccessful Polavision instant-movie system, and the business remained heavily tied to instant film. By the 1990s it offered medical imaging, identification systems, conventional film and early digital products, but the economics of chemical instant photography weakened rapidly. The original corporation entered Chapter 11 in 2001; a reorganized successor later came under Petters Group ownership and entered bankruptcy again in 2008.
The factory story did not end with that collapse. Polaroid stopped making instant cameras and film in 2008, but former employees and supporters organized the Impossible Project around the surviving Enschede film plant. They had to redesign materials because machinery, recipes and suppliers could not simply be switched back on. New film appeared in 2010, the company became Polaroid Originals after the Polaroid brand owner was acquired in 2017, and the businesses were brought together under Polaroid B.V. The legal entity and chemistry are not an uninterrupted continuation of the Cambridge corporation, yet the revival preserved a factory, a format and a community of photographic practice.
The cameras themselves reward close attention because Polaroid's name can hide several kinds of manufacture. The company controlled the film process, rollers, exposure logic and overall system, yet it also worked with established optical and mechanical suppliers. A Pathfinder with a Rodenstock Ysarex, a manual pack camera with a Tominon and Seiko shutter, and a 600SE with Mamiya-made lenses are all Polaroid systems without being Polaroid-made in every component. Even apparently simple plastic cameras may contain different two-, three- or four-element lens packages. Film compatibility is equally exacting: roll film, pack film, SX-70, 600, Spectra/Image and Captiva cartridges differ in size, sensitivity, battery provision or processing path. The right historical description therefore begins with the full object—model badge, film chamber, finder, lens engraving, shutter and serial location—then asks who actually made each part. That approach makes the catalog richer, because it reveals Polaroid as an orchestrator of chemistry, industrial design and specialist supply rather than reducing every camera to one corporate label.
From a Cambridge laboratory to the Model 95, the pack-film folders, the SX-70, the 600 and Spectra systems, and the giant 20x24 studio cameras, Polaroid repeatedly joined optics, chemistry, mechanics and design around one human wish: to hold a photograph while the moment was still close. Its corporate history includes rupture as well as continuity, but instant-film manufacture returned under the same name and remains the center of the modern company. That is why Polaroid still matters to photographers, artists, filmmakers and collectors: it made the time between seeing and sharing a picture feel newly negotiable.
