Nippon Kogaku K.K. was founded on 25 July 1917 with Mitsubishi capital by combining the optical work of Tokyo Keiki, Iwaki Glass, and Fujii Lens Manufacturing. Optical-glass research began in 1918, resumed in 1922 after interruption, and reached a stable mass-production basis by 1927. Eight German engineers invited in 1921 helped develop design, production, and factory practice.

Paul Franke and Reinhold Heidecke founded Franke & Heidecke in Braunschweig on 1 February 1920. The firm first concentrated on stereo cameras, beginning with the plate-based Heidoscop. The roll-film Rolleidoscop of 1926 provided the first documented use of the Rollei name, conventionally explained from roll film and Heidecke, and supplied the mechanical and optical starting point for a compact twin-lens camera.

1928-1936

A small prototype series was presented in December 1928 and the commercial Rolleiflex reached the market in 1929. The original camera made six 6×6cm exposures on 117/B1 film. The 1932 Standard adopted 120 film and added crank advance and an exposure counter after first-frame alignment. A 4×4 Rolleiflex on 127 film appeared in 1931, and the simpler Rolleicord line followed in 1933. Franke & Heidecke moved into a new Braunschweig factory in 1930.

1929-1945

The Anytar 12 cm f/4.5 of 1929 was Nippon Kogaku's first photographic lens. The NIKKOR trademark was filed in 1931 and registered in 1932; production history under that name begins with aerial-survey lenses in 1933. Nippon Kogaku supplied the Nikkor lens, mount, viewfinder optics, and rangefinder mechanism for the Hansa Canon introduced in 1936. During the war the company became a large military-optics supplier, but public specialist histories disagree on its exact number of factories.

1930s

1937-1945

The 1937 Rolleiflex Automat sensed the start of the film, eliminated the red-window loading step, coupled crank advance with shutter cocking, and reduced accidental blank or double exposures. During the Second World War civilian camera output contracted as the factory produced military optics. A bombing raid on 15 October 1944 destroyed much of the Braunschweig plant, and occupation restrictions constrained the immediate restart.

1945-1958

After Japan's surrender, Nippon Kogaku converted to civilian production. Drawings for a small camera were completed in September 1946, and the Nikon Model I reached the market in March 1948. Nikon was formed from the company's NIKKO abbreviation with a final N; Nikon's own history rejects the later claim that it was derived from Zeiss Ikon. Nikkor lenses used by LIFE photographers and Korean War correspondents helped establish the brand abroad. Canon began using its own Serenar lenses in 1948 rather than continuing to depend on Nippon Kogaku.

1946-1955

Postwar production rebuilt the Automat and Rolleicord lines. The 1945-generation Automat could carry a Zeiss Tessar or Schneider Xenar, and the 1950 models added coated optics and flash synchronization. The first f/2.8 Rolleiflex appeared in 1950; the 2.8C of 1953 offered Schneider Xenotar or Zeiss Planar taking lenses. The Rolleimarin underwater housing entered series production in 1954.

The E and F generations integrated photoelectric meters and, on the F models, coupled them to shutter-speed and aperture controls. The Tele-Rolleiflex of 1959 used a 135mm f/4 Sonnar and the Wide-Angle Rolleiflex of 1961 used a 55mm f/4 Distagon. The company became Rollei-Werke Franke & Heidecke in 1962. Zeiss Planar and Schneider Xenotar options remained important parallel optical supply paths rather than separate body families.

1959-1976

The Nikon F, announced in 1959, established the F bayonet as the organizing interface for Nikon's SLR system. The company combined a new mirror box and pentaprism SLR body with mechanisms and production knowledge from its rangefinder line. The system expanded through professional bodies, lenses, finders, screens, motor drives, and specialized accessories. A 1962 agreement with La Spirotechnique brought the French Calypso underwater-camera design into production as the Nikonos rather than as an original Nikon design.

1960s

1966-1975

Rollei moved beyond fixed-lens TLRs with the modular Rolleiflex SL66 medium-format SLR in 1966 and the compact Rollei 35. The SL35 opened a 35mm SLR branch in 1970 using the Rollei bayonet commonly called QBM. Period literature identifies lenses designed by Zeiss and Schneider, while the SL66 catalog states that lenses could be made by Carl Zeiss or by the Rollei group under Zeiss license. The company expanded into Singapore in the early 1970s and presented the electronically controlled SLX in 1974.

1970s

1976-1986

Continuous series production of the traditional TLR line ended in 1976, though special editions and later revivals followed. The SLX entered production as Rollei's electronic 6×6 platform, and the 6006 and SL2000F developed related electronic and modular ideas. Financial collapse in 1981 broke the old company structure; operations continued from 1982 as Rollei Fototechnic under new ownership. A 1973 factory notice also shows that 2.8F and 3.5F production could change from Planar to Xenotar without changing the camera stock number, a warning against identifying body generation from lens maker alone.

1977-1987

Nikon introduced Automatic Maximum Aperture Indexing, or AI, in 1977 and offered modification of many earlier lenses. The F3 of 1980 used electronic shutter control and a Giorgetto Giugiaro exterior design. Autofocus evolved through the lens-motor F3AF in 1983 and the body-drive F-501 in 1986. In parallel, Ultra Micro NIKKOR optics and related precision work led to semiconductor lithography; the 1980 NSR-1010G was Nikon's first commercial stepper and the first made in Japan.

1980s

1987-2003

The 2.8GX of 1987 revived the twin-lens form with modern metering and electronics rather than restoring uninterrupted mass production. The 6008 followed in 1988, and later 6000-system models added autofocus, digital backs, and new controls. Rolleiflex 4.0FW and later FX versions again placed TLR construction beside modern professional systems. These products used different serial conventions from the classic pre-1976 TLR ranges.

1988-1998

Nippon Kogaku changed its legal name to Nikon Corporation on 1 April 1988. The F4 and later F5 developed the autofocus professional SLR while retaining the F-mount's basic bayonet. Compatibility remained substantial but not universal because different bodies and lenses supported different mechanical couplings, focus drives, CPUs, and aperture controls. Nikon also expanded its international production network and continued industrial, scientific, and precision-equipment businesses.

1990s

1999-2005

The Nikon D1 of 1999 made a Nikon-designed professional digital SLR available at 650,000 yen, approximately one third of the price of competing professional digital systems cited by Nikon. Digital bodies retained the F mount and accelerated the transition from film while adding sensor-format and electronic-compatibility distinctions. Nikon continued professional film-camera development through the F6 and introduced DX-format digital systems alongside the full-frame film mount.

2000s

2004-2009

Rollei Produktion was separated in 2004, and Franke & Heidecke GmbH continued professional-camera manufacture from 2005. Consumer and professional activities were divided among separate businesses. The Hy6 medium-format platform was introduced in 2007, but Franke & Heidecke entered insolvency in 2009. DHW Fototechnik emerged as a production and service successor using the Braunschweig site and inherited technical capability.

2006-2017

In January 2006 Nikon sharply reduced its film-camera and manual-focus lens lineup, concentrating the remaining film range mainly on the F6 and FM10 as the business shifted toward digital. The separate Nikon 1 system appeared in 2011 with a CX-format sensor and its own mount. A contracting interchangeable-lens-camera market contributed to companywide restructuring between 2016 and 2018; Nikon's public record does not provide a single factory announcement that cleanly dates the end of every Nikon 1 product.

2010s

2010–present

DHW later failed, and DW Photo continued a narrower Braunschweig-based manufacturing, repair, and upgrade business. Its current service list includes Hy6, 6000-series, SL66, SL35, and all Rolleiflex TLR versions. Separately, the current Rollei consumer business states that the old camera manufacturer no longer exists in that form and that worldwide Rollei brand rights have belonged to a newer company since 2010; the current retail site is operated by RCP Handels GmbH & Co. KG. These are distinct forms of continuity and should not be merged into one legal manufacturer.

2018–present

Nikon introduced the Z 7 and Z 6 mirrorless cameras in 2018 with the new Z mount, whose 55 mm internal diameter and 16 mm flange distance created a distinct native lens system. The FTZ adapter preserved access to many F-mount lenses with model-dependent functional limits. Nikon Corporation continues to make and sell imaging, industrial, scientific, healthcare, and precision equipment and retains in-group capabilities in optical glass and components while manufacturing through a global network.
