The rebuilt Munich works introduced the Technika III in 1946 and developed coupled-rangefinder Super Technika versions for export during the 1950s. By 1957 Linhof offered 6×9, 4×5, and 5×7 bodies, the Technika Press, and the Aero Technika, supported by tested lenses from specialist German optical makers.

Kardan opens the studio system

Linhof translated its precision-camera practice into the Kardan optical bench. Color, Bi, Standard, and Super Color versions placed movable standards on rails for long extension, format changes, and controlled perspective in studio, industrial, and architectural work, complementing rather than replacing the folding Technika.

Medium-format systems diversify

Technika 70, Press 70, Aero Press, Electric 70, and the fixed-lens Linhof 220 explored faster roll-film work. Bright-frame finders, coupled lenses, exposure metering, motorized transport, and interchangeable backs carried Linhof precision into press, travel, aerial, and industrial photography beyond the classic 4×5 field camera.

Super Technika V matures

Super Technika V bodies in 4×5, 5×7, and 6×9 refined the drop-bed system with rangefinder coupling, triple extension, revolving backs, and extensive movements. Aerial cameras reach orbit

Aero Technika 45 EL combined motorized large-format transport, vacuum film flatness, and interchangeable focusing lenses for aerial work. Linhof records American and European mission use, while the later Aerotronica 69 adopted a rotating high-speed shutter and a large 6×9 motor cassette for mapping and observation.

Technorama widens roll film

The fixed-lens Technorama 617 began Linhof’s 6×17 panoramic line in 1976. A redesigned body, the 612pc II with built-in rise, and the interchangeable-lens 617s III expanded the idea. Shift accessories and lens modules brought architectural control to rigid roll-film cameras before original lens supply ended.

Portable monorails take shape

Technikardan cameras rotated their standards around a telescoping monorail for compact transport, combining field portability with direct view-camera movements in 6×9 and 4×5. Techno extends field geometry

William and Thomas Smithies Taylor opened a Leicester lensmaking business in 1886, and William Smithies Hobson joined in 1887. Harold Dennis Taylor of T. Cooke & Sons patented the three-element anastigmat in 1893 and arranged for Taylor, Taylor & Hobson to manufacture it in Leicester under the Cooke name. The first photographic lenses followed in 1894, establishing a brand-and-maker relationship that would last more than a century.

Speed Panchro reaches Hollywood

Bell & Howell took control in 1930 and distributed Cooke cine lenses in the United States. Speed Panchros expanded across the focal range needed by 35mm studios, while Lee's inverse-telephoto design provided the long back focus demanded by three-strip Technicolor cameras and helped the Leicester lenses become studio standards.

Rank ownership and lens coating

Rank acquired Taylor Hobson in the mid-1940s, and factory coating became regular practice in 1947. Gordon Cook joined in 1948 and began revising the Speed Panchro line with new glass and larger coverage, carrying prewar designs into a postwar cinema industry moving toward wider screens and higher contrast.

The 20-100mm Varotal of 1971 established the mechanical pattern for later Cooke cinema zooms. Varokinetal, Super Cine Varotal, Varopanchro, wide-angle Varotal, and Cinetal models served 16mm, Super 16, and 35mm production, while work on S4 primes prepared the lens branch for a new corporate life.

Cooke lens branch separates

Les Zellan led the purchase of Taylor Hobson's optical division and formed Cooke Optics Limited.
