Fritz Viktor Hasselblad founded F.W. Hasselblad & Co in Gothenburg in 1841 as a general trading company. The family moved into photographic imports in the 1880s and became the Swedish distributor for George Eastman’s products. Hasselblad Fotografiska AB was separated as a dedicated photographic business in 1908. Victor Hasselblad, born in 1906, learned the trade through the family business and international work before opening Victor Foto with Erna Hasselblad in Gothenburg in 1937.

1937-1940

Victor Foto processed, copied, and enlarged photographs and developed a camera workshop. Erna Hasselblad was a business partner, board member, and operational figure whose contribution has been understated in older accounts. Swedish Air Force interest in an improved aerial reconnaissance camera gave Victor’s workshop the commission that turned repair and retail experience into camera manufacture.

1941-1945

Under the name Ross AB, Victor’s team put the handheld HK-7 aerial camera into serial production in 1941 and followed it with the larger fixed SKa4. Hasselblad’s official history records 240 HK-7 units from 1941 to 1943 and 342 military cameras of all types delivered from 1941 to 1945. Interchangeable magazines and compact mechanical packaging developed for the military work informed the postwar civilian project.

1946-1956

Hasselblad presented its first civilian modular 6×6 single-lens reflex camera in New York on 6 October 1948. Initially called simply the Hasselblad and later named 1600F, it used a focal-plane shutter and interchangeable Kodak lenses, magazines, and viewfinders. Early mechanisms were delicate, and the 1000F followed with a slower top shutter speed and extensive mechanical revisions. The fixed-lens Supreme Wide Angle added a second route into the system through the Zeiss Biogon concept before the 500 series.

1957-1976

The 500C of 1957 replaced the body’s focal-plane shutter with a leaf shutter in each lens, enabling flash synchronization at every speed. Carl Zeiss engineered and manufactured the V-system optics to Hasselblad requirements and also engineered the shutters used in those lenses. The 500C/M, motorized EL cameras, SWC family, and extensive backs and finders expanded the same modular logic. Hasselblad reports about 76,700 500C bodies made from 1957 to 1970.

1962-2003

Walter Schirra carried a modified 500C on Mercury-Atlas 8 in 1962. NASA and its contractors progressively altered Hasselblad bodies, magazines, finishes, lubricants, controls, and lenses for Gemini and Apollo. Apollo 11 carried three 500EL cameras; the lunar-surface data camera used a reseau plate and Zeiss Biogon 60mm f/5.6. Hasselblad and the Hasselblad Foundation describe the formal relationship as continuing until 2003.

1977-1997

Hasselblad returned to focal-plane shutters with the 2000 series in 1977 and refined the idea in the electronically metered 200 series. The 500 line continued alongside it, gaining interchangeable screens, through-the-lens off-the-film flash metering, improved mirrors, and motor-drive options. Ownership passed from Victor and Erna Hasselblad to the investment company Säfveån in the late 1970s, but surviving accounts disagree whether the decisive sale should be dated 1976 or 1978.

1998-2003

The XPan, introduced in 1998, was a joint Hasselblad-Fujifilm project sold in Japan as the Fujifilm TX-1. It exposed either 24×36mm or 24×65mm frames on the same 35mm film and used dedicated Fujinon-built lenses. In 2002 the jointly developed H1 established a new 6×4.5 autofocus platform for film and digital backs. The H system used an electronic databus and HC lenses made by Fujinon rather than the Zeiss mechanical lens family of the V system.

2004-2010

Shriro Sweden, then Hasselblad’s holding company, acquired the Danish scanner and digital-back company Imacon in 2004 and combined the businesses. Imacon founder Christian Poulsen became chief executive. The merger joined Hasselblad’s camera platform to digital backs, Flextight scanners, software, and later integrated H cameras. Hasselblad’s own technical journal described H-lens development as a collaboration: Swedish engineers increasingly shaped optical design and made the shutter and diaphragm assemblies in Gothenburg, while Fujinon refined designs, ground the glass, and completed lens assembly in Japan.

2011-2016

Ventizz Capital Fund IV acquired Hasselblad in 2011. A 2012 Sony partnership produced the Lunar and related cameras built around Sony platforms, an attempt to enter smaller-format consumer segments through exterior design and materials rather than a new Hasselblad imaging architecture. Hasselblad ended production of the 503CW in 2013, closing manufacture of the classic V-system camera line. DJI acquired a strategic minority stake and a board seat in 2015. The X1D-50c of 2016 then established a compact mirrorless medium-format X system with Swedish-designed XCD leaf-shutter lenses.

2017–present

Industry reporting in 2017 said DJI had increased its holding to a majority stake, but no public Hasselblad or DJI release located in this research confirms the percentage change. Hasselblad continued the X system, introduced the X2D generation in 2022, and connected current digital capture to legacy bodies through the 907X and CFV backs. Dealer-reported official notice ended new H-system orders in 2023. Victor Hasselblad AB remains the legal entity in Gothenburg and continues to market medium-format cameras and lenses.

Leica

1849-1910

Carl Kellner founded the Optical Institute in Wetzlar in 1849 to make optical instruments. Ernst Leitz joined in 1864, became a partner in 1865, and took sole control after Friedrich Belthle's death in 1869, continuing the firm under his own name. Serial production and international sales made microscopes the business's foundation long before it manufactured the small-format camera now associated with Leica.

Oskar Barnack joined Leitz in 1911 and developed a small still camera using 35mm cine film horizontally for a 24x36mm frame. The Ur-Leica prototype was completed by 1914. Ernst Leitz II approved series manufacture in 1924, and the Leica I was presented at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1925. Leica was described by the company as an abbreviation of Leitz Camera. Early production cameras used fixed lenses, chiefly the 50mm f/3.5 optical family associated with Max Berek's work.

1930-1938

The Leica I Model C introduced interchangeable 39mm screw-mount lenses in 1930, initially with each lens adjusted to a particular body. By the end of 1930 or during 1931, Leitz standardized the flange distance; standardized bodies were marked with a zero at the mount and cameras from serial 65,001 onward were made for interchangeable standardized lenses. The Leica II of 1932 integrated a coupled rangefinder, and the Leica III of 1933 added slow speeds. Leitz also maintained separate production books for camera and lens number allocations.

1939-1948

Under National Socialism, Leitz production was redirected toward military optics and used deported forced labor. At the same time, Ernst Leitz II, Elsie Kuhn-Leitz, and company associates assisted persecuted people through training, employment, financial support, and emigration. Frank Dabba Smith's scholarship stresses this combination of humanitarian action, conformist public conduct, military production, and forced labor rather than presenting a simple rescue narrative. Civilian camera production resumed after the war.

1949-1963

Postwar Leitz continued screw-mount cameras and created new optical-glass and lens-development capacity. Ernst Leitz Canada opened in Midland, Ontario, in 1952 and became a major source of cameras and optical designs. The M3, presented in 1954, introduced the Leica M bayonet and combined viewfinder-rangefinder with automatically selected bright frames. The M2 followed in 1957. M-mount lenses and screw-mount lenses with suitable adapters created broad continuity, but early collapsible and specialized designs retained handling or compatibility limits.

1964-1975

The Leicaflex of 1964 opened a 35mm SLR branch with a bayonet whose aperture-information cams changed across later bodies. The Leicaflex SL arrived in 1968. The M5 became the first M camera with an integrated through-the-lens exposure meter. Canadian optical work under Walter Mandler produced influential M and R lenses, including the 50mm f/1 Noctilux design. Leitz opened its Portuguese factory at Vila Nova de Famalicao in 1973 for components and later complete camera assembly.

1976-1985

The electronic Leica R3 of 1976 was developed with Minolta and Copal and assembled in Portugal. Later R cameras and lenses continued the SLR bayonet while adding a stepped R cam and, eventually, ROM contacts. Ernst Leitz Canada developed the M4-2 and continued camera and lens production. The M6 of 1984 returned an exposure meter to the classic-size M body. In 1985 Wild Heerbrugg acquired the Leitz family's company shares, ending direct family control of the larger optical enterprise.

1986-1998

The photography division was restructured and renamed Leica GmbH in 1986, moved from Wetzlar to a purpose-built Solms factory in 1988, and became the camera-focused Leica Camera company. Leica Camera AG separated from the wider Leica Group and completed a Frankfurt stock-market offering in 1996. That year also brought the independently designed R8 and Leica's first digital camera, the stationary S1 scanning system. In 1998 the broader Leica businesses became independent camera, microscopy, and geosystems companies, while the first Digilux compact was based on a Fujifilm platform.

1999-2005

Leica expanded its digital work through cooperation rather than a wholly internal product chain. Collaboration with Panasonic began in 2000 for digital and audiovisual lenses and extended to digital cameras in 2001. The M7 retained film and added an electronically controlled shutter. Facing severe financial pressure during the digital transition, Leica gained an investment from Andreas Kaufmann's ACM-associated group in 2004; Kaufmann became majority owner in 2006.

The M8 of 2006 carried the M mount into digital capture with a smaller-than-full-frame sensor and 6-bit lens coding. The M9 of 2009 became the first full-frame digital M rangefinder. Leica ended production of R cameras and lenses in 2009 without the announced generational successor. Blackstone-advised funds acquired an indirect 44 percent minority stake in 2011 while ACM remained majority shareholder. A 2012 squeeze-out placed all Leica Camera AG shares in Lisa Germany Holding and ended the public listing.

2014-2019

Leica Camera returned its headquarters and major production functions to Wetzlar's new Leitz Park in 2014. The Leica T introduced the short-register electronic mount now called L-mount, and the full-frame SL followed in 2015. In 2018 Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma announced the L-Mount Alliance, allowing each company to develop bodies and lenses around the common specification. Shared mount dimensions did not erase differences in manufacturer, firmware, product support, or sensor format.

Leica Camera continued analog and digital M cameras, the SL and Q families, medium-format S cameras, and sport optics while broadening technology partnerships. The Panasonic relationship was renewed through L-squared collaboration in 2022, and the company expanded mobile imaging with outside electronics makers. Current corporate material identifies Wetzlar and Vila Nova de Famalicao as production sites.
