1934-1939

Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd. was established in January 1934 after the photographic-film operations of Dainippon Celluloid were separated under a government industrial plan. The Ashigara factory began film, photographic paper, and dry-plate production. An Odawara site was added in 1938 as the company widened its materials and chemical base.

1940-1947

The Odawara works began optical-glass production in March 1940 and lens production the following month. More than a dozen glass types were made by the end of that year. The first company-built camera was a military aerial-observation camera, not a civilian Fujica. In 1944 Fuji acquired Enomoto Kogaku Seiki and formed Fuji Photo Optical, creating a separate precision-optical company within the group.

1948-1957

The Fujica Six IA appeared in April 1948 as the first commercial Fujica still camera. Initial bodies and shutters were supplied externally, and production delays exposed the difference between group capability and complete vertical integration. Camera manufacture was consolidated at Fuji Photo Optical in 1950. Odawara developed new high-index and rare-earth optical glasses and produced Crystar, Fujinar, and other lenses; the 1954 Leica-thread Fujinon 50mm f/1.2 is an early documented use of the Fujinon name. In 1957 Odawara's lens-production equipment and technology, with some staff, moved to Fuji Photo Optical.

1958-1969

Fujica expanded through 35mm rangefinders and automatic-exposure cameras, including the 1962 Fujica 35 Auto M, the 1963 Fujica Half, and the 1967 Compact 35. Fuji also developed the Single-8 cartridge and camera system, introduced in 1965 after its earlier Rapid-8 approach was abandoned in response to Kodak's Super 8. The 1968 G690 began a professional 6×9 rangefinder branch. Fuji Photo Optical participated across the camera, lens, and motion-picture programs.

1970-1978

The Fujica ST701 of 1970 opened the company's M42 SLR family. The ST801 followed in 1972 with open-aperture metering, a 1/2000-second top speed, and EBC Fujinon lenses; the electronically controlled ST901 arrived in 1974. Fuji's Electron Beam Coating first reached a marketed lens on the Single-8 Z800 zoom in December 1971, then interchangeable ST801 lenses in September 1972, medium-format lenses in 1973, and large-format lenses from 1974. The fixed-lens GW690 of 1978 simplified the earlier interchangeable-lens G system.

Professional cameras and Fujinon lenses · Fujica SLR cameras and Electron Beam Coating

1979-1985

Fujica shifted its 35mm SLRs from M42 to a proprietary bayonet in 1979. The export STX-1 and AX-1, AX-3, and AX-5 families used Fujica X-mount and EBC X-Fujinon or X-Fujinon lenses with different automatic-diaphragm and exposure capabilities. This mount has a 43.5mm register and no direct relationship to the digital Fujifilm X mount introduced decades later. Screw-mount SLR production ended during the transition, and the Fujica 35mm SLR branch ended in the mid-1980s.

1986-1997

Fuji introduced the one-time-use QuickSnap in 1986 as film with a lens, creating a mass-market camera category tied directly to film manufacture and processing. The GX680 also appeared in 1986 as a 6×8 studio system with a revolving back, view-camera-style movements, and a thirteen-lens GX range. In 1988 Fuji demonstrated the FUJIX DS-1P, a prototype camera designed to record digital image data to a memory card; a commercial electronic still-camera line followed rather than the prototype itself entering ordinary retail sale.

1998-2003

The 1998 TX-1 panoramic rangefinder, sold internationally as the Hasselblad XPan, switched between 24×36mm and 24×65mm frames on the same roll and used jointly developed Fujinon lenses. Fuji's professional digital and medium-format work also converged with Hasselblad in the GX645AF program. Contemporary corporate reporting described the GX645AF as jointly developed, with Fuji Photo Optical integrated into manufacture and marketing.

2004-2010

Fuji Photo Optical changed its name to Fujinon Corporation in October 2004 to unify corporate and brand identity. In 2006 the Fuji group adopted a holding-company structure: FUJIFILM Holdings became the parent and FUJIFILM Corporation the main operating company. Fujinon Corporation merged into Fujifilm Corporation in July 2010. A parallel manufacturing reorganization created Fujifilm Optics from Fujinon Mito and Fujinon Sano, preserving specialist production in the group under new legal names.

2011–present

The fixed-lens X100 appeared in 2011 and the interchangeable-lens X-Pro1 in 2012, establishing the present Fujifilm X system and XF Fujinon lens line. The larger-format GFX system followed in 2017 with GF lenses. Fujifilm Optics continues camera, interchangeable-lens, broadcast, cinema, binocular, projector, and industrial-optics production. This living Fujinon identity is a continuation of group optical capability, but modern X and G mounts require their own catalog branches rather than being attached to old Fujica X or film-era serial assumptions.

Horseman 104 completed

1958system

Komamura completed the Horseman 104 as an identification camera for the police. The model linked the early public-service cameras to the compact professional system that soon appeared under Topcon Horseman branding, combining Komamura direction with Tokyo Kogaku participation.

1960s-1970ssystem

The 960, 760, 970, 980, and 985 developed the compact 6x9 press and technical-camera idea through several generations. Official service records preserve these distinct names alongside Super Topcor optics, while surviving manuals and systems show the importance of backs, cams, and rangefinder coupling.

VH-R refines compact technical camera

The VH and rangefinder-equipped VH-R carried the compact roll-film technical-camera concept into a mature system. Movements, interchangeable backs, ground-glass focusing, and model-specific rangefinder provisions made the cameras unusually versatile, but also created compatibility boundaries collectors must respect.

Field cameras reach four by five

1980s-2000ssystem

Horseman 45FA, 45HD, and Woodman 45 brought folding-field portability to 4x5 photography. The 45FA and 45HD shared an 80 mm board concept but differed in rear movements, extension, focusing equipment, and front-rise control, so they represent distinct working bodies rather than trim variations.

Modular studio systems expand

1980s-2000smanufacturing

The LS, LE, LX, and LX-C optical-bench cameras extended Horseman into modular studio work, with documented 4x5, 5x7, and 8x10 configurations. Their rail, bellows, standards, and interchangeable rear frames made format and movement capacity central parts of the system design.

Panoramic systems broaden formats

SW612 and SW617 cameras turned 6x12 and 6x17 roll-film panoramas into purpose-built professional systems. Later Professional, SWP, SW612D, and SWD-II Pro variants brought interchangeable mounts, digital backs, and shift movements into the same wide-angle design tradition.

Digital adapters preserve movements

2000s-2010sengineering

DigiWide, DigiFlex, LD, VCC Pro, ISS-G3, TS-Pro, and Axella products translated view-camera geometry into digital workflows. Rather than treating a sensor as a fixed endpoint, Horseman used interchangeable mounts, bellows, rails, and standards to keep perspective and focus control available.
