Tokyo optical works established
1932-1933corporateTokyo Kogaku Kikai Kabushikikaisha was established in September 1932 from K. Hattori's surveying-instrument operation and lens facilities acquired from Katsuma Kogaku Kikai. It began with surveying instruments, binoculars, cameras, and military optics, then moved its head office and main works to Itabashi in April 1933.

First civilian cameras emerge
1937-1945manufacturingThe 6×4.5cm Lord entered production in July 1937 as Tokyo Kogaku's first civilian camera, but wartime conditions limited it to roughly fifty examples. The folding Minion followed in 1938, while the wider works concentrated on surveying, binocular, aerial-camera, and military optical production until the factory closed briefly at the war's end.

Civilian production rebuilds the company
1945-1953businessAuthorized to resume civilian work in November 1945, Tokyo Kogaku exported binoculars and restarted cameras from surviving Minion parts. The Minion 35 appeared in 1948, domestic camera sales resumed in limited form in 1949, and ophthalmic instruments began in 1947. This diversified reconstruction led directly to the Topcon 35 in 1953.

Topcon becomes a camera system
1951-1959systemPrimoflex twin-lens reflex cameras, the Topcon 35 rangefinder family, and Topcor lenses turned photography into Tokyo Kogaku's leading postwar business. The 1957 Topcon R opened a professional 35mm SLR line, while the company-designed Topcon Horseman 960 of 1959 began a long-running large-format branch that outlasted the small cameras.

Lens-shutter SLR branch expands
1960-1962engineeringAfter becoming an affiliate of Tokyo Shibaura Electric in 1960, Tokyo Kogaku widened its camera program. The Topcon PR was Japan's first domestic lens-shutter 35mm SLR, and the 1962 Topcon RS answered a development request from American distributor Beseler. These cameras prepared the separate leaf-shutter and UV-mount branch.

RE Super changes exposure metering
1963-1964engineeringThe Topcon RE Super brought built-in TTL full-aperture metering to a production 35mm SLR in 1963. Slits in the reflex mirror fed a cell behind it, while the RE Auto-Topcor lens relayed aperture information to the body. The 1964 Topcon Uni extended mirror-meter thinking to an interchangeable-lens, lens-shutter SLR.

Parallel Topcon systems reach maturity
1963-1978systemTokyo Kogaku developed two distinct SLR paths: the professional RE family with RE Auto-Topcor lenses on its Exakta-derived bayonet, and the lens-shutter UV family that culminated in the Unirex. Beseler names on American-market bodies and later outside-made RE and K-mount products make engraving, interface, and maker attribution separate questions.

Global growth outlives small cameras
1969-1980businessA Fukushima production company was formed in 1969, followed by service and sales subsidiaries in Europe and the United States in 1970 and Singapore in 1979. As ophthalmic and electronic surveying instruments reshaped the business, Topcon ended sales of 35mm cameras in December 1980; Horseman large-format production continued.

Optics become networked solutions
2010-2024businessTopcon concentrated resources on positioning, eye care, and agricultural automation, combining optical instruments with software, connectivity, and machine control. Fully automatic OCT imaging, construction guidance, GNSS, and digital agriculture show how the same precision-measurement tradition continued after consumer cameras had left the product range.
