Zeiss — history

Zeiss Ikon began in Dresden in 1926 as an answer to abundance. Germany already had several accomplished camera makers, each with its own factories, designs, formats, and habits. Under the influence of the Carl Zeiss Foundation, four large concerns - ICA, Contessa-Nettel, Ernemann, and Goerz - were gathered into Zeiss Ikon AG. The name joined Zeiss with the Greek word for image, while the familiar tower emblem came from Ernemann's Dresden works. This was not a small workshop growing one model at a time. It was an industrial federation born with plate cameras, roll-film folders, cinema machinery, projectors, shutters, exposure meters, locks, and a bewildering inheritance of catalog numbers. Its first challenge was to turn that inheritance into a recognizable company.

The early catalogs show how gradual that work was. Names such as Icarette, Cocarette, Nixe, Maximar, Ideal, Trona, Universal, Juwel, Miroflex, and Ermanox survived the merger because customers and factories already knew them. The cameras covered everything from compact roll-film snapshots to large plate work, often with several shutters and lenses offered on the same basic body. Zeiss Ikon standardized where it could, but it did not erase the past overnight. The Box Tengor, descended from Goerz, became one of the simplest expressions of the new badge. At the other end of the scale, precision folders and reflex cameras carried forward the engineering cultures of Dresden, Stuttgart, and Berlin. This wide range made Zeiss Ikon less a single camera line than a photographic department store backed by serious manufacturing.

The Ikonta family helped give that range a clearer shape. Introduced around the turn of the 1930s, Ikonta folders were organized by film format and catalog number, from small 3x4 and 4.5x6 cameras to 6x6 and 6x9 models. Nettar offered a more economical path, while Super Ikonta added coupled rangefinding and increasingly elaborate handling. These cameras matter because they made precision medium-format photography portable without making every customer buy the same lens or shutter. A Tessar-equipped Super Ikonta and a simpler Novar-equipped folder could share a family resemblance while occupying very different places in the catalog. The folding bed, self-erecting front, bellows, and roll-film back became one of the most durable silhouettes associated with the company.

Zeiss Ikon's boldest prewar move was the Contax. Introduced in 1932 as a 35mm system camera, it answered Leica with a vertical metal focal-plane shutter, a long-base coupled rangefinder, a removable back, and a bayonet lens mount. The first model was ambitious and complicated; the Contax II and metered Contax III of 1936 refined the idea into bodies that press and documentary photographers could use quickly. Their lenses came from Carl Zeiss, whose optical designers gave the system fast Sonnars, wide Biogons, Tessars, and long telephotos. That division of labor is central to the story: Zeiss Ikon designed and manufactured cameras, while Carl Zeiss carried primary responsibility for the named optics. The badge on a body cannot by itself settle where a lens was designed, ground, coated, or assembled.

Other prewar systems tested different answers to the same photographic questions. The Ikoflex brought twin-lens reflex viewing to 6x6 roll film. Tenax used a square 24x24mm frame and a rapid wind lever for quick sequences. Super Nettel and Nettax explored less costly 35mm rangefinder forms. The 1935 Contaflex was an extraordinary twin-lens 35mm reflex with interchangeable taking lenses and a built-in exposure meter, not to be confused with the leaf-shutter single-lens Contaflex cameras of the 1950s. Movikon cine cameras carried the company into 8mm and 16mm home movies. Across these products, Zeiss Ikon repeatedly combined optics, shutters, meters, finders, and film transport into complete systems rather than treating a camera as a box with a lens attached.

War broke that industrial world apart. Dresden factories were damaged, dismantled, sequestered, and ultimately nationalized. The eastern operation passed through forms of VEB Zeiss Ikon and, after further combinations, toward VEB Kamera- und Kinowerke and Pentacon. It produced important cameras, including the prism-finder Contax S lineage, but its legal and manufacturing path was no longer the same as the Stuttgart company. In the west, Zeiss Ikon established its legal seat in Stuttgart and rebuilt around the former Contessa-Nettel facilities, the Berlin Goerz works, and other surviving branches. Cameras made in Dresden after nationalization and cameras made under the Stuttgart company therefore require separate factory attribution even when their names, engineers, or design ancestry overlap.

The Stuttgart catalog reopened familiar doors. Box Tengor, Nettar, Ikonta, Super Ikonta, and Ikoflex returned, joined by the compact folding Contessa 35 and the postwar Contax IIa and IIIa. The new Contax bodies were smaller and used a revised rangefinder system; their bayonet retained broad continuity, but collectors still need to check protruding rear elements and model-specific fit. The Contessa, with coupled rangefinder and meter, showed how much capability could be folded into a pocketable body. Zeiss Ikon was again serving beginners, travelers, demanding amateurs, scientists, and professionals from one catalog, yet the market was moving toward rigid-bodied 35mm cameras and single-lens reflex viewing.

The postwar Contaflex met that change with a leaf shutter behind a fixed or convertible front lens. Models I and II began with a fixed Tessar, while later III, IV, Rapid, Super, and Super B versions accepted Pro-Tessar front components. The shutter sat at the heart of a carefully choreographed cycle: it had to open for reflex viewing, close before the exposure, allow the mirror to rise, then open and close again to make the picture. This complexity delivered flash synchronization at every speed and a bright, direct view through the taking lens. Pantar and Pro-Tessar components extended the system, but they were not ordinary complete lenses and not every generation interchanged. The Contaflex became a successful family precisely because Zeiss Ikon kept refining automation, metering, and handling around that distinctive architecture.

At the top of the range stood the Contarex. Introduced at the end of the 1950s, the original meter-eyed body was quickly nicknamed the Bullseye or Cyclops. It was heavy, intricate, and supported an unusually ambitious set of bodies, interchangeable backs, close-up equipment, and Carl Zeiss lenses. The system grew to include the Special, Professional, Super, and Electronic, along with Biogon, Distagon, Planar, Sonnar, Tele-Tessar, Olympia-Sonnar, and mirror-lens Mirotar optics. A Contarex accompanied Edward White during the Gemini 4 spacewalk, giving the camera a memorable place beyond ordinary terrestrial photography. The achievement was real, but so was the burden: such mechanical and electronic sophistication was expensive to build and service as Japanese SLR systems advanced rapidly.

The final years brought Zeiss Ikon and Voigtlander into closer coordination. Icarex offered a more accessible focal-plane SLR in proprietary bayonet and later M42 forms, while Icarex 126 adapted the system idea to Kodak's cartridge format with its own non-interchangeable lens mount. Contaflex Super BC added through-the-lens metering; Contarex Super and Electronic pushed automation further; the Hologon Ultrawide wrapped a remarkable fixed 15mm lens into a purpose-built camera. The combined catalogs also reveal how readily brand, designer, and factory can diverge. An Icarex lens might bear a Voigtlander family name, a Carl Zeiss name, or a supplier relationship that must be checked individually. Shared distribution did not make every mount compatible or every optical formula a Zeiss Ikon design.

Camera production ended in 1972. The western company continued in security engineering, and the IKON name now belongs to an ASSA ABLOY business making locks and access products, a living branch of the old precision-mechanical enterprise but not a camera manufacturer. Carl Zeiss continued optical work and later licensed the Contax name to the Yashica and Kyocera system, which has no mechanical continuity with the 1932-1961 Zeiss Ikon rangefinders. In 2004 ZEISS returned the Zeiss Ikon name to a rangefinder camera developed with a Japanese partner and sold it until 2012. That camera used a Leica M-compatible mount and belongs to a revival chapter, not to the old Dresden or Stuttgart production sequence.

From the 1926 Dresden merger to the last Stuttgart-era systems, Zeiss Ikon compressed much of twentieth-century camera history into one company: inherited plate cameras, Box Tengor simplicity, Ikonta and Super Ikonta folders, the Contax rangefinder, Ikoflex reflexes, postwar Contaflex automation, and the formidable Contarex. Its factories and successors divided after war, and the camera business eventually yielded to security engineering and later licensed revivals. Yet the name remains meaningful because its products show how industrial design, precision mechanics, optical partnerships, and changing film formats repeatedly reshaped the act of taking a photograph. Few manufacturers left enthusiasts such a broad, challenging, and rewarding map of modern camera development.
