Voigtl — history

Voigtländer's story begins in Vienna in 1756, decades before photography had a name. Johann Christoph Voigtländer opened a workshop for precision instruments, and the family business grew through scientific and optical work, including spectacles and telescopes. That background mattered when photography arrived: this was already a shop accustomed to translating exact calculations into finely made objects. Peter Wilhelm Friedrich Voigtländer took charge in 1837, and from 1839 the firm traded as Voigtländer & Sohn. Within a year of photography's public announcement, he was working with the mathematician Josef Maximilian Petzval on a lens that changed what the new medium could do. Petzval calculated a remarkably fast portrait optic; Voigtländer manufactured it and built an elegant all-metal daguerreotype camera around it in about 1840-1841. At a moment when portraits still demanded punishingly long exposures, the partnership joined theory, glass, metalwork, and practical camera design in one persuasive photographic instrument.

The success of that early camera and lens pushed the business beyond the scale of its Vienna workshop. Voigtländer opened a factory in Braunschweig in 1849, and the German works gradually became the center of its photographic production. The move established the place most collectors now associate with the name: a factory that would make lenses and cameras for generations while photography passed from silvered plates to sheet film, roll film, and 35mm. Peter Wilhelm Friedrich transferred leadership to his son Friedrich Wilhelm in 1876, and the family enterprise became a public company in 1898. The legal form changed, but the craft at the center of the business remained recognizable. Voigtländer had learned early that a photographic lens was not merely an accessory. It could determine the speed, handling, and purpose of the camera built around it.

By the early twentieth century, Voigtländer had become both a camera maker and an optical house with an unusually broad vocabulary. Its 1914 catalog offered Collinear, Heliar, Dynar, Euryscope, Apochromat-Collinear, Oxyn, and telephoto lenses across numerous focal lengths and mountings. These names were not decorative flourishes: they marked different solutions for portraiture, general photography, copying, long-distance work, and the many plate sizes then in use. Some optics came complete in barrels or shutters, while others were supplied as cells or convertible combinations for cameras made elsewhere. That reach placed Voigtländer glass in a wider photographic ecosystem, not only on bodies bearing the same badge. Of all these families, the Heliar proved the most enduring. Its long life, joined later by Skopar, Dynar, Voigtar, Radiar, and apochromatic designs, made lensmaking the steady thread through a changing camera market.

Between the world wars, the Braunschweig firm translated that optical range into cameras for very different photographers. Plate cameras and roll-film folders shared the catalog with stereo and reflex designs. The Bessa name became especially important, expanding from straightforward folding cameras into a broad roll-film family that included rangefinder-equipped models and several lens-and-shutter combinations. Brillant cameras explored the appeal of reflex viewing, developing from metal-bodied pseudo-reflex forms toward focusing twin-lens operation, while the Superb offered a more elaborate twin-lens design. Bergheil, Avus, Alpin, Virtus, Inos, Perkeo, and Prominent carried the company into other formats and levels of sophistication. Together they show how Voigtländer worked: familiar optical names and dependable mechanical ideas were adapted to everything from approachable folding cameras to ambitious systems, giving the firm a presence in both ordinary family photography and exacting enthusiast work.

After the Second World War, the Braunschweig factory returned to civilian production and entered a fresh optical era. Coating improved light transmission and contrast, while the company renewed both its camera lines and its large-format lenses. The Heliar survived the transition, joined by Apo-Lanthar, Apo-Skopar, Ultragon, and Telomar designs. In plain terms, the apochromatic lenses were made to bring different colors to nearly the same focus, an especially valuable quality in demanding color, reproduction, and large-format work. Albrecht Wilhelm Tronnier contributed many of the period's important optical designs, including lenses associated with Voigtländer's postwar 35mm cameras. The breadth is striking: even as small cameras came to dominate the market, Braunschweig still produced serious optics for photographers working under a dark cloth. Factory-list research carries that large-format tradition to a final recorded batch in April 1972.

Voigtländer's most visible postwar cameras followed photography toward 35mm, and they did so with memorable mechanical character. The Vito evolved from folding bodies into rigid Vito and Vitomatic cameras suited to everyday use. The Vitessa announced itself with a tall plunger wind that made film advance part of the camera's silhouette; the Vitessa T added interchangeable lenses. Above them sat the Prominent rangefinders, a prestige system built around optics such as the Skoparon, Ultron, Nokton, Dynaron, and Super-Dynaron. These families shared Voigtländer's optical language while serving distinct cameras, a useful reminder that a celebrated lens name could travel farther than any one mount. The 50mm f/1.5 Nokton, for example, expressed the period's pursuit of fast available-light photography, while the Ultron offered another influential high-speed standard-lens identity. Cameras and lenses were being designed as systems, not simply assembled from interchangeable parts.

The Bessamatic and Ultramatic leaf-shutter SLRs carried that system thinking into the 1960s. Their central shutter offered synchronized flash across the shutter-speed range, but it also demanded intricate coordination among mirror, diaphragm, shutter, and film advance. Voigtländer surrounded the bodies with lenses including Skoparex, Color-Skopar, Color-Lanthar, Septon, Dynarex, Super-Dynarex, and Skopagon. The most dramatic was the 36-82mm f/2.8 Voigtländer-Zoomar. Designed by Frank Back and manufactured by Voigtländer in several mount versions, it belonged to the early generation of production zoom lenses for 35mm still photography, turning a range of focal lengths into one continuous optical instrument. The Ultramatic added automatic exposure, and later CS cameras brought through-the-lens metering. These were mechanically ambitious answers to a market increasingly interested in speed and automation.

Corporate ownership changed as the products became more complex. Schering held a majority interest before transferring control to Carl Zeiss in 1956, and Voigtländer's distribution and production became increasingly coordinated with Zeiss Ikon. The arrangement connected two great German optical traditions, but it could not prevent mounting pressure from newer camera systems and international competition. Camera manufacture in Braunschweig ended in 1971; the last recorded large-format lens batch followed the next year. Rollei then took control of the Voigtländer operation and carried the name onto Singapore-made SLRs, compact cameras, and 110-format products. The factory story had changed decisively, yet the brand remained active in photography. This is continuity through succession rather than an unchanged production line: different owners and manufacturing sites carried forward a name whose reputation had been built in Vienna and Braunschweig.

The modern chapter began in 1999, when Cosina revived Voigtländer photographic products with the Bessa-L and a compact 15mm f/4.5 screw-mount lens. Later Bessa rangefinders used Leica screw and M-compatible VM mounts, placing new, relatively accessible cameras and lenses into a photographic tradition shaped by compact rangefinder equipment. The lens program then expanded across Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF, Fujifilm X, Micro Four Thirds, SLR, and other interfaces. Historic names including Heliar, Nokton, Ultron, Skopar, and Lanthar returned, now attached to modern designs rather than replicas of every earlier formula. In Japan, Cosina describes an in-house process extending from optical design through polishing, coating, and barrel assembly; in Germany, Voigtländer GmbH within the Ringfoto group administers the brand. That partnership gives the old name a contemporary manufacturing life while openly belonging to a new industrial setting.

From Johann Christoph Voigtländer's Vienna workshop to the Braunschweig factory and Cosina's present-day production, the enduring thread has been lensmaking. The Petzval portrait lens and metal daguerreotype camera helped define photography's first commercial decade; the Heliar and apochromatic large-format lenses served generations of plate and view-camera users; Bessa, Vitessa, Prominent, Bessamatic, and Ultramatic carried Voigtländer into roll film and 35mm; and the Zoomar pointed toward the modern zoom era. Ownership, factories, and product families have changed, but Voigtländer remains an active manufacturer-facing name after more than two and a half centuries. For photographers and filmmakers it still signifies distinctive optics; for collectors and optical historians it links the birth of calculated photographic lenses with living camera culture.
