Pentax — history
Pentax began as an optical manufacturer, not as the company that carries the imaging business today. Kumao Kajiwara founded Asahi Optical Joint Stock Co. in Otsuka, Tokyo, in 1919. The workshop first made spectacle lenses, then expanded into binocular and projection optics. Its AOCO projection lens appeared in 1923, and by 1931 the company was designing camera lenses and supplying optics for the Pearlette camera. It reorganized as Asahi Optical Co., Ltd. in 1938 and marketed the Promar camera lens around 1940. War interrupted normal production, but the factory resumed work in 1946. This early record matters because Pentax's later reputation for cameras grew from an existing optical trade, and because Asahi supplied lenses before it manufactured a camera of its own.
The Takumar name emerged from that optical background. It honored Takuma Kajiwara, a photographer and the founder's brother, and became the identifying name for successive Asahi lens families. Early Takumars served the company's cameras and also belong to an era of contract production and changing mounts. The name alone therefore does not specify an optical formula, mount, coating, or date. An M37 Takumar, an Auto-Takumar, a Super-Takumar, a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar, and a K-bayonet SMC Pentax lens are related by maker and marketing history but not by one interchangeable mechanism or serial sequence. Identification has to begin with the full engraving and physical interface.
Asahi Optical entered camera manufacture with the Asahiflex I in 1952. Japanese engineering histories recognize it as the country's first domestically produced 35mm single-lens-reflex camera. It used an M37 screw mount and a waist-level viewing arrangement. The Asahiflex IIB of 1954 added an instant-return mirror, bringing the finder image back immediately after the exposure instead of leaving the photographer looking at a dark screen until the shutter was wound. This was an important step toward the familiar handling of later SLRs. Claims that it was the world's first require qualification, however, because earlier European cameras and mechanisms complicate the global priority question. Its secure distinction is the practical system Asahi put into Japanese series production.
The camera that gave the brand its lasting name arrived in May 1957. The Asahi Pentax combined a fixed eye-level pentaprism with the M42 screw lens mount and a layout that placed major controls where later 35mm SLR users expected them. A Science Museum Group history says Asahi acquired the Pentax name from VEB Zeiss Ikon. Popular explanations expand the word from pentaprism and Contax or Asahiflex, but no primary transfer document or factory statement located here settles the acronym. In the United States, distributor arrangements produced Heiland Pentax and Honeywell Pentax nameplates. Those badges describe the sales channel; period Honeywell literature still identifies Asahi Optical in Japan as the maker.
Through the early 1960s Asahi refined automatic diaphragms, metering, and system accessories. It showed a Spot-Matic prototype at Photokina in 1960 with through-the-lens spot metering. The production Spotmatic reached the market in 1964, retained the memorable name, but used average stop-down TTL metering rather than the prototype's spot pattern. It was enormously influential, yet it was not the first mass-produced TTL-metering SLR. Japan's National Museum of Nature and Science places the Topcon RE Super in production in 1963 and describes the Asahi Pentax SP as the second such camera in 1964. The accurate claim is that Pentax demonstrated early, then made TTL metering widely visible through a successful compact system.
Asahi expanded beyond 35mm with the Pentax 6x7 in 1969, a medium-format SLR built around the handling idea of an enlarged 35mm camera. In 1971 it introduced Super-Multi-Coated Takumar lenses. Pentax later described its SMC process in expansive terms and connected coating work to glass used in the Apollo program, while Fujifilm's own history records a parallel EBC multilayer program reaching commercial products in 1971 and 1972. Multilayer optical research was broader than either company. The defensible point is that Pentax made sophisticated multilayer coating a conspicuous feature of a complete SLR lens line. No primary record found here proves the frequently repeated OCLI or Zeiss licensing narratives.
A more visible system break came in 1975. The K2, KX, and KM replaced the M42 screw mount with the Pentax K bayonet and introduced SMC Pentax lenses. The Mount Adapter K preserved a path for many earlier screw-mount lenses, though with limits on automation and handling. Compact MX and ME bodies followed in 1976, while the K1000 became a long-lived mechanical teaching and consumer camera. The Auto 110 was a separate miniature system, not a small K-mount camera. The professional LX of 1980 combined modular viewing and sophisticated metering, and the ME-F of 1981 tested autofocus through a dedicated powered lens. Pentax was building several related but distinct systems, not one universal lens interface.
The K bayonet survived because Pentax repeatedly added functions around the same basic physical throat. KA introduced electrical aperture communication in 1983, and KAF-family generations added autofocus drive, data, power zoom, in-lens motor support, and eventually electronic diaphragm control. This continuity is useful but easily overstated. A lens may attach while losing open-aperture metering, automatic aperture control, autofocus, power zoom, or other functions. Conversely, an adapter can create a useful working combination without making two mounts native equivalents. For cataloging, the correct method is to record the exact mount generation and then list supported functions, rather than writing only 'K-mount compatible.'
Pentax also maintained a separate medium-format track. The 645 appeared in 1984, and the 645N added autofocus in 1997. During the same decade the company developed compact autofocus cameras, FA Limited lenses, and early digital products. Asahi Optical finally changed its legal name to Pentax Corporation on 1 October 2002. The *ist D followed in 2003 as the company's first digital SLR, retaining the K-mount lineage in a smaller-sensor body. A 2005 agreement with Samsung Techwin led to jointly developed digital SLR work and Samsung GX cameras that used Pentax-compatible technology and lenses. These cameras belong in the Pentax system history, but Samsung branding should still be recorded rather than absorbed into Pentax manufacture.
Corporate ownership then changed twice in rapid succession. HOYA pursued Pentax in 2007 and absorbed Pentax Corporation on 31 March 2008, with HOYA surviving as the legal company. In 2011 HOYA sold the Pentax Imaging Systems Business to Ricoh but retained former Pentax medical, component, and related operations. Ricoh established PENTAX RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. on 1 October 2011 and renamed it Ricoh Imaging Company, Ltd. on 1 August 2013. The company continued to use Pentax and Ricoh as product brands. Modern catalog records should therefore name Ricoh Imaging as the legal imaging company while retaining Pentax as the camera and lens brand.
Serial numbers do not simplify this story. No public Pentax or Ricoh Imaging document located in this research provides a universal serial-to-year decoder for cameras or lenses. Official archives are strong for model chronology, not manufacture dates. Early Asahiflex and Takumar reconstructions can be useful within a precisely identified version, but lens number blocks may cross focal lengths or production batches. A community K1000 table contains uncertain and non-monotonic groups, and the PentaxForums database consists of owner submissions. A 2005 forum post preserves a Pentax Imaging support response saying that a seven-digit number identifies an individual unit but not its production date or location. That evidence argues against decoding unsupported meanings from the number itself.
The reliable workflow is object first, serial second. Record the exact camera or lens name, mount, optical and mechanical version, engravings, product number, country markings, coating label, aperture mechanism, and distributor badge. Use official introductions and discontinued-model evidence to establish a possible interval, then narrow it with dated catalogs, manuals, warranty cards, receipts, packaging, or service records. Community serial tables can supply relative order or a cautious range when their scope matches the object, but they should be named and never converted into false precision. Pentax remains an active Ricoh Imaging brand, demonstrated by continuing K-system products and the 2024 Pentax 17 film camera, yet every historical object still belongs to the particular legal, optical, and mount generation that made it.
