Meyer — history
Meyer-Optik Görlitz began as a small maker inside a larger Görlitz network of camera workshops, glass workers, and precision trades. Optician Hugo Meyer and merchant Heinrich Schätze founded the Optisch-Mechanische Industrie-Anstalt Hugo Meyer & Co. in 1896 and began making photographic optics. The firm outgrew its first rooms on Löbauer Straße and moved production to Biesnitzer Straße in 1901. Early Aplanat and Aristostigmat lenses helped make the workshop competitive. This is the start of the historical enterprise, not the founding date of today's Meyer Optik Görlitz GmbH, which is a separate revival.
Expansion brought both original designs and acquired product lines. Meyer bought the Optische Anstalt Schulze & Billerbeck in 1911, gaining the Euryplan family and experience with lens sets. The Trioplan appeared by the mid-1910s as a comparatively simple triplet that could be made in many focal lengths and applications. The exact first year is disputed: specialist histories cite 1913 or 1916, and a later summary awkwardly attributes a 1916 calculation to Paul Rudolph even though his Meyer collaboration began after the war. The safe conclusion is that Trioplan production was established before Rudolph joined, while exact authorship remains open.
Paul Rudolph gave Meyer a different kind of optical importance. After earlier work at Carl Zeiss on influential anastigmatic designs, he collaborated with Meyer from about 1920 on the Plasmat family. Doppel-Plasmat, Kino-Plasmat, Makro-Plasmat, and related designs pursued stronger correction or exceptional speed for still and cine use. The Kino-Plasmat became one of the fastest photographic lenses of its time. Meyer also made projection and enlarging optics and supplied other manufacturers, including Ihagee. Its growth therefore came from design, production, and OEM relationships rather than from control of a single camera system.
By the 1930s, Meyer offered interchangeable lenses for several camera makers and formats. The company adopted the name Optische und Feinmechanische Werke Hugo Meyer & Co. in 1936. Civilian camera-lens production then yielded to wartime optical work, and part of the operation was relocated. In 1945 the plant's production equipment was removed to the Soviet Union as reparations. That break matters when assessing postwar continuity: the people and place retained knowledge, but machinery, records, materials, and institutional ownership changed. Production restarted in 1946 under severe constraints rather than continuing normally across the war.
The postwar enterprise entered public ownership through the Saxon nationalization process. It first used the VEB Optisch-Feinmechanische Werke Görlitz name and became VEB Feinoptisches Werk Görlitz in 1948. Surviving state-archive descriptions and the factory's 1956 anniversary publication document an organized industrial successor, while later technical histories describe engineers rebuilding lens calculations and production capacity. In 1952 the factory installed antireflection-coating equipment. A red V for Vergütung appears on some early coated lenses, but its absence does not prove uncoated glass and its presence is not an exact year code.
The postwar catalog mixed continued names with new work. Trioplan, Primoplan, Telemegor, Helioplan, and Primotar lenses served taking, enlarging, and projection roles; Lydith, Oreston, Orestor, Orestegon, and Orestegor later broadened the SLR range. Period brochures show that Meyer-Optik was a product mark on lenses made by the legally named VEB Feinoptisches Werk Görlitz. They also show how wrong it is to speak of a single Meyer mount. Products appeared for Exakta, M42 Praktica and Pentacon bodies, Altix, Praktina, Pentina, Praktisix or Pentacon Six, leaf shutters, barrels, and other interfaces.
Some long telephotos used an interchangeable rear-adapter system, so two lenses with the same optical name can present different mounts or diaphragm behavior. Other families changed from manual to preset, automatic, or electric aperture mechanisms. Black, bright-alloy, and zebra barrels overlap with serial ranges rather than defining them alone. DDR S, Q, 1, and inspection symbols identify regulatory or quality classifications whose rules changed over time, not a ranking that can be read as a model suffix. A useful catalog record therefore separates optical family, focal-length version, mount, diaphragm mechanism, barrel generation, coating mark, and observed serial.
VEB Feinoptisches Werk Görlitz joined the Kombinat VEB Pentacon Dresden in 1968, but the Meyer-Optik engraving did not vanish that day. Brochures and surviving lenses show a transition through 1970 and 1971 as Pentacon replaced the maker name and individual lens names. Former Meyer calculations such as the Lydith, Oreston, Orestor, Orestegon, and Orestegor families continued in revised barrels or under standardized names. Some products acquired export labels or later Carl Zeiss Jena markings. Pentacon branding can therefore conceal Görlitz lineage, but it does not prove it, because the combine coordinated more than one factory and design source.
The Görlitz works moved into the VEB Carl Zeiss Jena combine during the 1984-1985 reorganization. After political change, Feinoptisches Werk Görlitz GmbH was separated in 1990 and again shipped lenses marked Meyer-Optik and Made in Germany. The revival was brief: the works closed on 30 June 1991. Even this small window contains attribution traps. Documented large-format Meyer-marked lenses were Tessar types supplied from the Carl Zeiss Jena plant at Saalfeld, and their serials can follow Zeiss or short successor sequences rather than the old Meyer table.
The name returned in 2014 through Koblenz-based net SE, not through a reopening of the old Görlitz factory. The company exhibited manual lenses at photokina and used crowdfunding for later projects. net SE entered insolvency in July 2018 with undelivered projects outstanding. OPC Europe acquired the trademark rights and design material that December but did not assume the predecessor's debts. OPC's 2019 portfolio audit also disclosed that the inherited Somnium was a modified Russian lens and the Nocturnus a modified Chinese lens. That finding makes model-by-model attribution essential for the 2014-2018 period.
OPC rebuilt the product and manufacturing program, releasing the Trioplan 100 II in June 2020 and further II-series lenses afterward. A new Meyer Optik Görlitz GmbH began operating in 2021, and a Hamburg manufactory opened that November. Official material assigns optical-component work within the German group, mechanical parts to German precision suppliers, and hand assembly to Hamburg. Current lenses are manual, have no electronic camera communication, and are sold in multiple mounts. The word Görlitz now expresses historical brand origin; it should not be used as a current factory location without specific evidence.
Historic serial dating remains useful, but it is a reconstruction. Hartmut Thiele's fabrication books are the principal specialist reference, yet their publisher states that no Meyer production records were found. Independent tables broadly place serials around the mid-300,000s to 500,000 near 1930, around one million by 1940, about 1.1 to 1.2 million around 1950, roughly 2.5 to 2.6 million near 1960, and above four million late in the 1960s. These are range anchors, not exact assembly dates. Different tables disagree on boundaries and even transpose digits in early checkpoints.
After the Pentacon transition, a universal serial rule becomes actively unsafe. Specialists document multi-million numbers alongside later low blocks assigned by product or batch, and the former Görlitz factory's output can appear under several names. Identify the object first: photograph the full engraving, serial, mount, diaphragm controls, rear adapter, barrel style, coating and quality marks, and any country label. Then compare a model-specific catalogue and a serial reconstruction. For expensive or contradictory lenses, seek the Fotomuseum Görlitz, Saxon State Archive, period factory literature, and the current manufacturer's records. Date estimates should remain ranges, and brand continuity should never substitute for evidence.
