Linhof — history
Linhof’s story begins in Munich in 1887, when precision mechanic Valentin Linhof opened a workshop at a moment when photography was still built around plates, bellows, brass, and patient mechanical adjustment. Early company accounts describe experiments with all-metal cameras, an unusual direction when wood remained normal. The exact “first” date is not perfectly consistent across Linhof’s own later histories, but the practical idea is clear: make the camera body a precision machine. Surviving examples from the opening decades include upright and square 9×12 cameras, a stereo-panorama model, and larger plate cameras. Their forms varied, yet they established the habit that would define the firm—rigid standards, repeatable movements, and metal construction intended for working photographers rather than novelty.
After Valentin Linhof’s death in 1929, the family workshop entered the period that created its best-known identity. Nikolaus Karpf joined the firm in 1933 and married into the Linhof family. By 1934 a prototype of the Technika was ready, and the production camera followed in the middle of the decade. Its name compressed “technische Kamera,” or technical camera, into a brand that would endure. The Technika joined the portability of a folding bed with the controls of a view camera: rise, shift, swing, tilt, and long bellows extension. Built in 6×9 and 9×12 formats before the war, it offered a way to carry architectural and studio logic into streets, factories, landscapes, and assignments beyond the studio.
The Second World War nearly destroyed the Munich works, but the postwar reconstruction produced the Technika III in 1946. This square-bodied generation became a foundation for the company’s international success. Linhof refined it repeatedly rather than treating one model name as one frozen design. Rangefinder-equipped Super Technikas could be coupled to individually selected lenses, while ground-glass focusing preserved the full movement-based method of a view camera. In the United States the coupled version found a strong professional market during the 1950s. The important achievement was not simply ruggedness. Linhof had made a large-format system that could move between hand-held rangefinder work and deliberate tripod composition without asking the photographer to change cameras.
The 1957 catalog shows the breadth of the mature postwar system. There were Super Technikas in 6×9, 4×5, and 5×7, a square-bodied Technika Press, and an Aero Technika for aerial and instrumentation work. Linhof did not claim to grind all the lenses itself. It received optics from Schneider, Rodenstock, Zeiss, and Voigtländer, tested them, mounted them in shutters and boards, and coupled selected examples to camera rangefinders. Names such as Super-Angulon, Symmar, Xenar, Biogon, Planar, Sonnar, Tele-Arton, Apo-Lanthar, and Imagon therefore belong to a network of specialist optical makers. Linhof’s contribution was exact mechanical integration: a lens, cam, shutter, board, finder, back, and body made to function as one working outfit.
During the same decade Linhof developed the Kardan optical-bench camera. Where the Technika folded into a protected box, the Kardan placed front and rear standards on a monorail so movements could be seen, measured, and extended. Kardan Color models ranged from 6×9 through 8×10, answering the needs of studio, product, architectural, and industrial photographers. The later Kardan Bi, Kardan Standard, Super Color, Kardan E, and Master GT and GTL refined that modular approach. Format conversion, long extension, yaw-free movements, and substantial standards mattered because a studio camera had to hold heavy lenses and backs in exact alignment. Linhof’s two great camera families were complementary: Technika for compact travel and fast setup, Kardan for open, expandable control.
The 1960s expanded Linhof beyond the classic folding field camera. The Technika 70 combined interchangeable lenses, a bright-frame range/viewfinder, exposure meter, and quick-change backs for roll film or perforated 70 mm film. Press 70, Aero Press, and Electric 70 variants adapted the same broad platform to news, aerial, industrial, and sequence work. The Linhof 220 took a different path: a slender 56×72 mm rangefinder with a fixed Rodenstock Technikar 95mm f/3.5 and a rotating handgrip. Meanwhile Super Technika V models appeared in 4×5, 5×7, and 6×9. Together they show a company testing how much professional control could be placed in cameras that were faster and more specialized than a conventional studio view camera.
Aerial and measurement work formed another serious branch. Aero Technika models used large film, vacuum-assisted flatness, motorized transport, and interchangeable lenses for mapping and observation. The 45 EL emerged in the early 1970s, and Linhof’s history records its use on American and European space missions. Aerotronica 69 followed in the 1980s with a rotating shutter capable of very short exposures and a motor cassette for hundreds of 6×9 frames. Metrika cameras served photogrammetry, while Technar and wide-angle bodies addressed rigid, special-purpose applications. These instruments were far from the familiar folding Technika in appearance, yet they sprang from the same concern: hold film and optics in a predictable geometric relationship under demanding conditions.
Panoramic photography gave Linhof one of its most distinctive later systems. The first Technorama 617 appeared in 1976, exposing four 6×17 frames on a roll of 120 film through a fixed Schneider Super-Angulon 90mm lens. Unlike a rotating-lens panorama camera, it used a stationary wide-angle lens and a long, flat film gate, allowing a single instantaneous exposure. A redesigned body followed in 1988. The 612pc II added a 6×12 format and built-in rise for architectural work, while the 617s III of 1996 introduced interchangeable 72, 90, 180, and later 110 and 250 mm lens modules. Shift adapters and ground-glass accessories pushed the rigid panoramic camera closer to technical-camera practice without sacrificing its direct handling.
Linhof kept developing field and studio cameras as digital capture arrived. The Technikardan, introduced in 1984, folded rotating standards around a telescoping rail to combine monorail movements with compact transport in 6×9 and 4×5 formats. The Master Technika continued the folding lineage, joined by the rangefinder-free Master Technika 2000 and the wide-angle-focused 3000. In the studio, the M 679 of 1996 was designed from the start for both roll-film backs and emerging digital backs. The cc revision added direct rear-standard corrections in 2000, and the cs version of 2004 incorporated a leveling panorama base and further refinements. These were not digital cameras in the usual sense; they were precision platforms that let changing capture devices share view-camera geometry.
The company’s legal organization changed in 1998 with the foundation of Linhof Präzisions-Systemtechnik GmbH, but manufacturing and service remained in Munich. The Techno, introduced in 2008, brought the M 679 back standard and Technika lensboards into a compact, shift-capable camera for digital backs and roll-film cassettes. Current listings also retain the Master Technika classic and 3000, Technikardan S in 6×9 and 4×5, Kardan re, M 679cs, Technorama bodies, and the RD 1 reproduction camera. Availability of particular lenses and service parts has narrowed; Linhof states that many older cameras can no longer be repaired. Yet the continued production of mechanical camera systems is more than a trademark revival. It is a living continuation of the Munich workshop’s central craft.
From Valentin Linhof’s late-nineteenth-century metal cameras to the Technika, Kardan, Technorama, M 679, and Techno, the enduring thread has been precision camera making. Linhof’s most memorable products did not depend on one format or one optical supplier. They created stable relationships among lenses, shutters, movements, film, and later digital backs, giving photographers deliberate control over perspective and focus. The company’s longevity matters because the same Munich name still belongs to a manufacturer of working cameras, not merely to a historic badge. For photographers, filmmakers, collectors, and optical historians, Linhof remains a compact history of professional photography itself: portable when needed, modular when possible, and built around the belief that mechanics can enlarge creative choice.
