Kodak

Kodak — history

Kodak is the collector-facing name for a photographic system and a trademark, not a promise that every marked item came from one factory or even from one uninterrupted operating business. The history begins with George Eastman's Rochester enterprises and extends through Eastman Kodak Company, regional subsidiaries such as Kodak Limited and Kodak A.G., acquired names such as Premo and Hawk-Eye, numerous optical and shutter suppliers, a 2013 corporate reorganization, and modern brand licensees. For Brass & Glass, Kodak is the right short manufacturer name, but legal entity, branch, component maker, and date must be resolved for each object.

George Eastman began making dry plates commercially in Rochester in 1880. On 1 January 1881 he and Henry Strong formed the Eastman Dry Plate Company. The enterprise became the Eastman Dry Plate and Film Company in 1884, the Eastman Company in 1889, and Eastman Kodak Company of New York in 1892. The present registrant is Eastman Kodak Company, incorporated in New Jersey in 1901 and still headquartered at 343 State Street in Rochester. Those names describe corporate stages; they should not be copied backward onto an 1888 camera whose period maker was the Eastman Dry Plate and Film Company.

The 1888 Kodak camera joined hardware to service. It arrived loaded for one hundred circular exposures, after which the owner could return the camera to Rochester for developing, printing, and reloading. The museum record for one surviving example shows a compact wood, leather, metal, and glass body with its own stamped number. Transparent roll film followed in 1889, and the one-dollar Brownie of 1900 lowered the hardware threshold further. Kodak's historical importance therefore rests on an integrated route from exposure through finished print, supported by mass production, distribution, and advertising.

The product range quickly became too diverse for a single camera genealogy. Brownie boxes, Folding Pocket Kodaks, Vest Pocket and Autographic cameras, Panoram swing-lens bodies, plate and roll-film professional equipment, and acquired Premo and Hawk-Eye lines used different formats, picture sizes, shutters, and lenses. A number in a Kodak name may refer to a body size or film family rather than a chronological generation. Colors, outfits, and faceplates may be editions, while a change of film path, finder, shutter, focusing method, meter, or standard lens can define a different camera. The exact marked name and hardware must lead classification.

Kodak also became a multinational manufacturer. It opened a plant at Harrow in 1891, and later Kodak Limited, Kodak-Pathe, Canadian, German, and other operations created regional equipment histories that do not inherit Rochester serial rules automatically. In Rochester the former Blair Camera factory became Hawk-Eye Works in 1911. Kodak established optical design there in 1912, and its own lens manual says it began making simple-type lenses that year before adding Kodak Anastigmats. Hawk-Eye Works later supported amateur, professional, cine, enlarging, projection, aerial, and specialist optics.

Motion-picture systems added another branch. Cine-Kodak joined 16mm camera, film, processing, projector, and lenses in 1923; an 8mm amateur system followed in 1932. Still-camera formats proliferated at the same time. A Cine Ektar, an enlarging lens, a projection lens, and a camera-integral Ektar may share Kodak optical branding while differing completely in correction, mount, coverage, focusing mechanism, and intended use. Fixed camera lenses normally belong in the camera record unless period evidence shows a separately marketed optical product.

The 1931 acquisition of the Nagel Camera Company created Kodak A.G. in Stuttgart. Its first Retina appeared in 1934, and the plant later produced Retina folders and rangefinders, rigid-bodied Retinas, Retinettes, Retina Reflex cameras, and other equipment. This branch is especially easy to miscatalog. A Retina Type or earlier Nr. identifies a model configuration, not a year. Folding c and C models use convertible front components combined with a fitted rear component, whereas the rigid Retina IIIS uses fully interchangeable lenses. Schneider, Rodenstock, and other optical names remain maker evidence, not decorative aliases for Kodak.

Rochester precision cameras formed separate systems of their own. The Bantam Special used 828 film and a fixed Ektar package; the Super Kodak Six-20 combined 620 film with built-in photoelectric exposure control; the Ektra used a focal-plane shutter and a proprietary family of interchangeable Ektars; the Medalist and Medalist II paired 620 film with a 100mm Ektar; and the Signet 35 used 135 film with a dedicated 44mm Ektar. Their film paths, mounts, shutters, finders, and body sequences are not compatible, even when the same Kodak and Ektar names appear.

Kodak's lens literature is unusually useful because it separates manufacturing and nomenclature. The company documented surface treatment in 1940 and later called magnesium-fluoride-coated optics Lumenized, generally marking them with a circled L. In 1946 it reclassified Kodak Anastigmat Special as Anastar and Kodak Anastigmat as Anaston while stating that the renamed formulas did not change. Ektar denoted the leading Kodak optical family across still, cine, enlarging, and projection applications; Anastar, Anaston, Ektanon, Kodar, and Kodet occupied different roles. A renamed engraving alone is not a new optical design, and a coating mark is one component attribute rather than a camera date.

The 126 Instamatic system of 1963 and 110 Pocket Instamatic system of 1972 renewed the original strategy of simplifying loading through an equipment-and-materials standard. They are nevertheless different formats with different cartridges and camera platforms. Instamatic also appeared in movie-camera contexts, so the word cannot safely identify film size without the exact product. Kodak engineer Steven Sasson's completely digital camera prototype of 1975 belongs to the same long engineering history. Later professional and consumer digital products show adaptation, but not every electronic camera with Kodak on the case was manufactured in Rochester.

Eastman Kodak entered Chapter 11 in 2012 and emerged as a reorganized company on 3 September 2013. The restructuring transferred Personalized Imaging and Document Imaging to the pension plan of Kodak's United Kingdom subsidiary, creating a business continuity later associated with Kodak Alaris rather than leaving those operations inside Eastman Kodak. The current Eastman Kodak Company still manufactures professional and consumer still film, motion-picture film, chemicals, print systems, and advanced materials. It also operates a Brand segment that licenses Kodak for third-party digital, instant-print, and 35mm cameras and other goods. Kodak Alaris appears in Eastman Kodak's current filing as a film and chemicals customer, which confirms a commercial relationship without merging their identities. A current yellow-box film, a licensed camera, and an archival Eastman Kodak body can therefore carry related branding while involving different sellers, makers, and legal entities. That distinction is essential when catalog records combine vintage equipment, consumables, and modern products from different evidence periods. A modern licensed camera is the licensee's product even when the trademark is genuine.

Dating must begin after identity. Kodak's 1987 customer-service history supplies strong U.S.-market model ranges, but those are not unit serial allocations. A specialist CAMEROSITY decoder can turn applicable two-letter prefixes on many Kodak-made lenses into a two-digit manufacturing year, yet no factory instruction was found and the result dates the lens, not automatically the body. Observed postwar Retina spans overlap and come from field sightings rather than surviving ledgers. Brass & Glass should record body serial and location, lens serial, shutter number, Type or Nr., format or mount, branch, supplier, and service evidence separately, and it should leave an exact date blank when those records do not converge.
