Horseman — history
Horseman began not as a romantic brand name but as a practical answer to a public-service problem. Komamura Brothers started business in Kyoto in 1933, and the postwar company developed the wooden PC-101 identification camera for Japan's National Police Agency in 1948. Two years later the Horseman 102 appeared as another police identification camera. The official chronology distinguishes those dates from the formal establishment milestone of 1947, a useful reminder that the enterprise's roots, incorporation, and camera program are related but not identical events. From the start, Horseman meant carefully controlled photography: a camera built to record evidence, preserve scale, and make repeatable negatives rather than chase the casual snapshot market.
The police-camera work led Komamura toward compact professional view cameras. The Horseman 104, completed in 1958, brought Tokyo Kogaku into the story and prepared the way for the Topcon Horseman series. The 960, 760, 970, 980, and 985 became the best-known expressions of a distinctive idea: substantial view-camera movements and interchangeable roll-film backs in a body compact enough for location work. They sat between the hand-held press camera and the larger studio view camera. A photographer could use ground-glass precision, a coupled rangefinder on appropriate models, and medium-format roll film without carrying a full monorail outfit. That combination gave Horseman an identity of its own even when Topcor lenses and the Topcon name appeared prominently on the equipment.
Horseman's engineering was therefore as much about systems as bodies. The camera, focusing back, roll-film holder, lensboard, rangefinder cam, shutter, and lens all had to cooperate, yet they did not necessarily come from one factory. Tokyo Kogaku supplied important Topcon-branded bodies and Topcor optics in the early professional line, while Komamura directed and marketed the Horseman system. Later technical cameras accepted conventional large-format lenses from firms such as Rodenstock, Schneider, Nikon, and Fuji, mounted in standard shutters on Horseman's 80 mm square boards. Horseman's achievement was often mechanical integration: making a small, precise platform that could turn specialist components into a working photographic tool.
The VH and VH-R carried the compact 6x9 technical-camera idea into a mature form. The VH-R's rangefinder distinguished it from simpler ground-glass operation, while the rotating and interchangeable backs extended the camera's usefulness across portrait and landscape orientations and several roll-film formats. These cameras could look deceptively similar to adjacent Topcon Horseman models, yet small changes in rangefinder coupling, backs, lens cams, and front standards matter in use. Their enduring appeal comes from the way they compress the logic of a view camera into a field instrument: movements remain visible and deliberate, but the photographer can work with the speed and economy of roll film.
That compactness also changed how a view camera could be used. A studio camera normally asks the photographer to build a working space around it; the smaller Horseman bodies were designed to enter spaces already in use. Interiors, location portraits, industrial records, and landscapes could be approached with rise, shift, tilt, and careful ground-glass composition without abandoning roll-film convenience. The cameras did not make those movements automatic. They made them available in a disciplined, transportable package. This balance between precision and mobility became one of the strongest links between Horseman's early identification work and its later professional systems.
Komamura also pursued folding 4x5 cameras. The 45FA and 45HD were related but not interchangeable descriptions of the same body. The more elaborate 45FA offered rear-standard tilt, rack-and-pinion front rise, greater extension, a Fresnel screen, and an included focusing hood; the 45HD simplified the package while retaining a 4x5 international back, useful front movements, and the 80 mm Horseman lensboard. Woodman 45 provided a lighter field-camera branch. Together these cameras made Horseman's compactness argument on sheet film: they brought architectural control, selective focus, and large-negative detail into equipment intended to leave the studio.
At the opposite end of the scale, the L series treated the camera as an expandable optical bench. LS, LE, LX, and LX-C models, followed by 5x7 and 8x10 variants, used standards, bellows, rails, and interchangeable backs as modular elements. The official manual shows that format changes were designed into the family rather than improvised around it. In the studio, where shifts, swings, tilts, and long bellows extension could be set with care, Horseman competed through mechanical range and repeatability. These large cameras share a name with the compact press lineage, but they answer a different working rhythm and should be understood as a parallel professional system.
Panoramic photography opened another chapter. The SW612 and SW617 families placed wide-angle lenses in rigid, purpose-built bodies for 6x12 and 6x17 cm negatives. Their proportions changed the act of composition: the photographer framed a broad scene without stitching and retained the tonal depth of roll film. Professional and later digital variants added interchangeable components, movements, or digital-back interfaces. The SWD-II Pro manual describes a wide-angle camera whose lens and camera mounts can both be changed and whose rise, fall, and lateral shift make it more than a simple panoramic box. Horseman was carrying its old concern with controlled geometry into a new format.
Digital photography did not end that concern; it redirected it. DigiWide, DigiFlex, DigiFlex II, LD and LD Pro, VCC Pro and VCC Pro DB, ISS-G3, and the Axella line adapted view-camera movements to smaller capture areas and changing camera mounts. Some were complete cameras, while others were converters or modular platforms linking a lens standard to a DSLR or digital back. Axella S uses a Linhof-standard panel at the front and interchangeable Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fujifilm camera-side kits. This is classic Horseman thinking: preserve the optical geometry and movements, then make the capture device replaceable.
The unusual Horseman 3D shows the same willingness to solve a specialized imaging problem. Its manual describes a coupled rangefinder stereo camera exposing paired 24 x 31.5 mm images and using two Super Horseman MC lenses. It belongs beside the police cameras and panoramic bodies not because the products look alike, but because all three turn a demanding photographic procedure into a purpose-built instrument. Horseman's catalog repeatedly favored photographers who needed alignment, repeatability, or a particular negative shape, whether they worked in identification, architecture, studio still life, landscape, or stereo photography.
Corporate change in 2012 separated the old maker from the photographic business without erasing the lineage. Komamura transferred its photographic and broadcasting-equipment operations to Kenko Professional Imaging, while Komamura continued into high-sensitivity and night-vision imaging. Kenko subsequently opened a Horseman Museum in Nakano, displaying cameras and accessories and allowing visitors to handle then-current Axella and VCC Pro equipment. The transfer therefore marked a change in stewardship rather than a simple disappearance. Historical products may no longer be repairable, and present listings do not prove continuous manufacture of every model, but the Horseman name remains attached to a documented professional-camera tradition.
From a Kyoto business begun in 1933 and a police identification camera built after the war, Horseman grew into a remarkably varied family of photographic instruments. The 102 and Topcon Horseman press cameras, the VH-R and 45FA technical cameras, the L-series optical benches, the SW panoramic bodies, and the Axella digital platforms all express the same habit of mind: control the relationship between lens, film or sensor, and subject. Across changes of supplier, format, and corporate owner, Horseman has remained meaningful because it made demanding camera movements portable, modular, and purposeful for working photographers and for the collectors who study how professional photography was practiced.
