Argus — history
Argus began with a problem that had nothing to do with cameras: radios sold in the colder months and left an Ann Arbor factory quiet in spring and summer. The International Radio Corporation, organized in 1931 by local businessmen including William E. Brown Jr., George Burke, and inventor Charles A. Verschoor, had found a mass market for Kadette radios in molded plastic cabinets. Verschoor recognized that the same materials and production habits might make a camera affordable to families who admired a Leica but could never justify its price. Introduced in May 1936, the $12.50 Argus Model A put 35mm photography into a distinctly American, Depression-era package: compact, practical, and made by the thousands rather than treated as a luxury instrument.
The Model A worked because Argus understood the whole proposition, not merely the body shell. Its collapsible lens made the camera pocketable, ordinary 35mm cartridges simplified film handling, and the price invited experimentation with the new world of color transparencies. The family quickly widened. The AF added focusing, the short-lived B paired a faster lens with a Prontor shutter, and the A2 models placed an extinction meter and exposure calculator in the body. The fixed-focus AA and postwar FA carried the molded-body idea into simpler or flash-synchronized forms. These variations show a company learning in public, adjusting focus, exposure help, shutter equipment, and price while keeping the camera recognizable.
Argus found its defining shape in the C series. The 1938 C added a rangefinder but asked the photographer to transfer the measured distance to the lens. The C2 connected finder and lens with the exposed gear that would become part of the camera's personality. In 1939 the C3 added flash synchronization and settled into the rectangular Bakelite form later nicknamed the Brick. Nothing about it pretended to be delicate. Its controls were plainly visible, the lens sat in front of a shutter built into the body, and its construction could be serviced without the mystique surrounding more expensive imports. That mixture of affordability, durability, and honest mechanical logic sustained the C3 for more than a quarter century.
The standard 50mm f/3.5 Cintar was central to the C camera, but the system was broader than the familiar normal-lens Brick suggests. Argus promoted German-made Sandmar wide-angle and telephoto lenses, while Bausch & Lomb, Soligor, Fujita, Robin, Zeika, Angenieux, and Enna-Werk appear in the surviving accessory record. Their common task was unusual: the photographer removed the front lens assembly while the shutter and diaphragm remained in the camera. External finders handled the changed angle of view. It was an economical route to a system camera, though not a universal mount in the modern sense, and careful identification still depends on the exact lens, barrel, and coupling.
World War II interrupted civilian momentum but enlarged the company's technical reach. Beginning with government contracts in 1940, Argus moved progressively into military optics and radio equipment; in August 1942 it halted domestic camera production altogether. A contemporary factory film shows camera machinery and unfinished stock moved into warehouses to clear floors for war work. The enlarged Ann Arbor operation employed many women in skilled production and earned repeated Army-Navy E awards. When civilian manufacture resumed, Argus possessed a larger plant, an experienced workforce, and a public identity built as much on precision war production as on inexpensive cameras.
Postwar Argus did not simply restart the old catalog. The 1947 Model 21 used a die-cast metal body, projected bright-line framelines, automatic shutter cocking, and flash facilities. The C4 turned that platform into a coupled-rangefinder camera, and the C44 made the normal lens interchangeable through a new proprietary system. Its Cintagon choices included a four-element 50mm f/2.8 and a six-element 50mm f/1.9, with 35mm and 100mm companions. These cameras were more polished than the C3, but their interfaces did not form one continuous compatible family: C-series screw-front lenses, fixed C4 optics, Geiss-modified C4 bodies, and C44 lenses each need to be understood on their own terms.
Medium-format photography gave Argus another recognizable branch. The plastic Argoflex E began as a twin-lens camera capable of taking 120 or 620 film before later examples were marked for 620 alone. After the war, Harley Earl's studio shaped the ambitious Argoflex II and the related metal-bodied EM and EF. The II's automatic film stop proved troublesome enough to prompt a recall, but the design lived on in revised forms. Simpler Argoflex Forty and Seventy-Five cameras placed waist-level viewing and large negatives within reach of family photographers, while name changes between Argoflex and Argus often described marketing rather than a wholly new machine.
Argus was willing to try almost every popular amateur format. The 828-film M could expose either full or half frames; its postwar relative appeared as Model 19 or Minca 28 and later under other badges. The sculpted A3 and photoelectric-metered CC moved away from molded boxes before wartime production stopped. The A4 and C20 approached the rounded, streamlined look of the 1950s. At the same time the long-lived C3 acquired Standard, Match-Matic, and Golden Shield dress and exposure-control variations, while the C33 and Autronic cameras attempted to make settings faster and more automatic without surrendering the familiar rectangular body.
Corporate ownership shifted just as imported cameras transformed the American market. Sylvania agreed to acquire Argus Cameras in 1956 and operated it from 1957. Mansfield Industries bought the business in March 1962, and a May shareholder vote renamed the combined concern Argus, Inc. The badge then appeared on cameras sourced outside Ann Arbor, including Japanese products associated with Mamiya and later imported equipment. This did not make every Argus-marked camera an Ann Arbor design or every lens an Argus-made optic. It marked a change from a vertically involved American manufacturer toward a photographic-products company that increasingly relied on overseas partners.
By 1969 domestic camera production had ended, although Argus-branded imported and later digital cameras continued to appear. The historical company therefore has two afterlives. One is commercial: a familiar name reused on products made far from the original factory. The other is physical and civic. The surviving Ann Arbor buildings, museum collections, employee publications, films, manuals, and the cameras themselves preserve an unusually tangible record of an American optical workplace. The Argus Museum occupies part of that setting, turning what might have been only a trademark story back into a story about people, tools, and a city.
Dating an Argus rewards attention to construction as much as to numbers. The FA, Argoflex Forty, A4, and several other postwar models can carry compact year-month stamps, but locations and formats differ. C-series serials changed structure across prewar, postwar, Standard, and Match-Matic production, and survey-based date bands include overlaps and anomalies. Lens serials belong to the lens maker and should never be used as if they were body numbers. The most reliable reading combines the model, physical features, serial location, lens and shutter markings, and the cautious ranges reconstructed from many reported specimens.
From the first molded Model A to the C3, Argoflex, C44, and Autronic experiments, Argus made sophisticated photographic ideas feel approachable. It connected Ann Arbor plastics and radio know-how with color slides, interchangeable optics, bright-line viewing, coupled rangefinding, and automatic exposure. The company did not survive every change in the camera market, and its badge eventually traveled farther than its factory practice. Yet its historical identity remains unusually clear: for three decisive decades, Argus built cameras and optical equipment in Ann Arbor that taught a vast American audience how ordinary 35mm and medium-format photography could become.
