Schneider — history
Schneider-Kreuznach is the collector-facing name for a business whose legal identity has changed more quietly than its lens engravings suggest. Josef Schneider founded Optische Anstalt Jos. Schneider & Co. in Bad Kreuznach in 1913. The firm began as a mechanical workshop for optical lenses, registered enduring trade names during its first decade, and adopted the name Jos. Schneider & Co., Optische Werke, Kreuznach in 1921. Collectors encounter shortened forms such as Schneider, Schneider-Kreuznach and Schneider Optics, but the present German company is Jos. Schneider Optische Werke GmbH. The shared place-name on a bezel identifies Kreuznach association.
The early catalog developed around families rather than one universal class of lens. Xenar became a compact four-element standard type, Symmar a convertible large-format design, and Angulon a wide-angle family. Xenon, Xenotar, Tele-Xenar, Curtagon, Super-Angulon, Componon and Variogon later occupied different roles in still, enlarging, projection and motion-picture work. The same trade name could appear in several focal lengths or mechanical forms, while a familiar focal length and aperture could be supplied for incompatible mounts. A safe catalog record therefore starts with the entire engraving, focal length, maximum aperture, interface and serial, not the family name alone. Period literature also needs to be read for what it actually proves. A price list proves that a configuration was offered; a data sheet supports construction and dimensions; a camera manual establishes mounting and operation; and a surviving specimen proves its own markings. None of those sources alone proves uninterrupted production, every export engraving, or the exact date on which one lens left the assembly bench.
Schneider's factory identity remained closely tied to Bad Kreuznach. The company laid the foundation for a new plant at Ringstrasse 132 in 1937 and completed it in 1939. Wartime and immediate postwar output cannot be reconstructed from the modern chronology alone, and the published serial chart contains an unusually broad band between June 1942 and September 1948. That gap is evidence of reduced dating precision, not permission to interpolate an exact month. Any account of a wartime lens should distinguish the serial-chart span, the customer's camera production, and the date on a shutter or service record.
After the war, Schneider lenses became components in many other makers' systems. Kodak AG Retina cameras used Schneider Xenar and Xenon standards, later DKL lenses, and the keyed Xenon C convertible system. Rollei used Xenar and Xenotar taking lenses on twin-lens reflex cameras. Leica sold Super-Angulon lenses connected with Schneider design and manufacture, while Hasselblad offered Schneider Variogon zooms. The customer company designed or assembled the body and controlled its mount; Schneider's responsibility concerned the optical product to the extent supported for that contract.
The Retina C system is a particularly useful warning. Its 35mm Curtar and 80mm Longar pieces replace only the front optical component. The rear group and iris remain in the camera, and Schneider Xenon and Rodenstock Heligon versions use different keying. The later DKL Retina lenses are complete lenses in a different mount. Similar Kodak-facing names do not make the two systems interchangeable.
Schneider also built a broad large-format program. The original Angulon offered compact symmetrical wide-angle coverage; Super-Angulon expanded the angle and appeared in several constructions and apertures. Symmar began as a convertible family whose rear component could be used alone for a longer, softer image, while Symmar-S represented a later, non-identical generation. Xenar covered numerous normal focal lengths and apertures, and Tele-Xenar reduced required bellows draw for long focal lengths. A lens-board hole or shutter size is a mechanical clue, not proof that two optics share a formula.
The company's own chronology also shows how far its work extended beyond still photography. Cinema projection was important from the early years; the 1940s narrative emphasizes cinema activity, the 1950s brought spring-aperture SLR lenses and zoom development, and 1964 is associated with a zoom having fixed back focus. A Xenotar 80mm f/2.8 served on Lunar Orbiter IV in 1967.
Corporate diversification followed. Schneider formed a U.S. subsidiary in 1972, received motion-picture technical recognition, expanded into ophthalmic optics, and acquired the B+W filter operation in 1985. Heinrich Manderman acquired the company in the early 1980s; the current corporate account describes it as still family-owned. Later restructuring included Pentacon, Century Precision Optics, Asian subsidiaries and the integration of the ISCO group.
The present group remains headquartered at Ringstrasse 132 in Bad Kreuznach and operates through Jos. Schneider Optische Werke GmbH with subsidiaries in the United States and Asia. Its current business spans industrial optics, filters, photographic and cinema lenses.
Schneider's manufacturer-published serial chart is unusually valuable. It supplies 64 boundaries from serial 30,000 in December 1919 through 15,000,000 in November 2008. Those entries are boundaries, not annual blocks: a serial between two listed numbers belongs to the span between their dates. The width varies from about a year in some late periods to more than six years across the war. Exact boundary serials carry the stated month; intervening serials support only the bounding span. Numbers below or above the chart should not be forced into an answer.
Most importantly, the serial belongs to the lens. A camera cannot have been assembled before its fitted lens was made, but it may have been assembled much later, and the lens may have been replaced during service. Retina examples provide strong practical support that Schneider-made OEM lenses follow the published sequence, but Schneider has not published a blanket scope statement for every customer contract. Record the body number, lens number, shutter number, mount and service evidence separately.
Schneider-Kreuznach’s story spans more than a century of optical innovation, from its 1913 workshop in Bad Kreuznach to lenses used by Kodak, Rollei, Leica and Hasselblad—and even aboard Lunar Orbiter IV. Through changing markets, ownership and corporate structures, the enduring thread has been lensmaking. Still headquartered in Bad Kreuznach, Schneider continues the optical tradition that made names such as Xenar, Xenon, Symmar, Angulon and Componon familiar to generations of photographers, filmmakers and collectors.
