Spec Notes
*** THIS ROW WAS CORRECTED ON 2026-09-03 BECAUSE ITS PREVIOUS NOTES WERE FABRICATED. *** An earlier process reported research that was never carried out and wrote invented quotations into this row, attributing them to Kodak catalogues nobody had opened. Everything in this note was retrieved afterwards by bounded verbatim request against the named source and confirmed by a second differently-worded read. Where a fact could not be retrieved it is marked NOT SOURCED rather than replaced with a better guess. *** THE ORIGINAL No. 3, AND IT IS ONE OF TWO ROWS AGAIN. *** This row was previously recorded as a single row spanning 1900-1907, folded on the argument that the No. 3 was already metal-fronted in 1900 and so had only one dimension. THE FOLD WAS WRONG. What Kodak's 1900 catalogue actually says, on the No. 3's OWN page headed 'No.3 CARTRIDGE KODAK. FILMS AND PLATES.', is: 'The bed is of aluminum, blackened, [a]ll other exposed metal parts are polished or nickeled, and the covering is the finest black morocco, thus combining lightness and strength with elegance of finish.' NOTE WHAT THAT SENTENCE DOES AND DOES NOT SAY: it describes the BED as aluminium and says NOTHING WHATEVER about the front board. The earlier note's 'already metal-fronted' framing is not supported and has been removed. The Nos. 4 and 5 share a separate 1900 block reading '[W]hen open for [u]se these instruments expose to view a bed and front board of highly polished mahogany with buffed brass fittings.' *** THE DIMENSION THE FOLD MISSED: this 1900 block contains NO bed extension and NO rack and pinion. *** Both arrive in 1901 and both are described in a block headed 'CARTRIDGE KODAKS Nos. 3, 4 and 5' - so the second dimension applies to this size exactly as it does to the No. 4 and No. 5, which were split on it. AA-13 agrees independently, giving this camera two generations and naming the differentiator itself: 'No.3 Cartridge KODAK Camera (metal front slide block focus) (Improved metal front, bed extension, longer bellow and rack and pinion focus 1901) 1901 1907'. ONE FURTHER CORRECTION: the earlier note said the mahogany prose belongs to the Nos. 4 and 5. That is true of 1900 ONLY. From 1901 all three sizes share one block, and the 1901 catalogue says of all of them: 'The richness of the leather and the polished mahogany sets off the nickeled fittings in brilliant contrast.' THE GLASS PLATE ADAPTER IS AN ACCESSORY, not a variant. NO PRICE IS RECORDED. DATES ARE MARKET DATES.
